Getting that tone..

Hello everyone.

I'm currently putting together a blink 182 cover band and i'm really looking for that Mark Hoppus tone, I have a Laney RB3 amp and a Thunderbird Epiphone bass, I plan on getting a Squier Precision soon though, but does anyone how i can get that Mark Hoppus tone? Help will be much appretiated

the tech 21 VT pedal will help you out big time. use a p bass, use a thin pick, use medium-light gage nickel wound strings, and use the VT and you will be able to get hoppus like tones. you might need a compressor.

alot of people say to use chromes but i found it harder to get the tone when i put chromes on my hoppus p bass. i use EB slinkys and they sound great. also strum the pick between the neck and the pick up, you coan even strum over the neck at times but never go behind the pick up.

people will say to scoop the mids but if you listen to enema of the state you can hear a healthy amount of mids in his tone. his live tone and the tone on other cds did have some significant mid scoop, but its something your going to have to play with.

people will also tell you to use the search bar.

Oh rightt, well would it be possible to get that tone using the pedal and the thunderbird bass? I bought some Ernie Ball Hybrid slinkys last week, havn't put them on yet. I usually strum closer to the bridge, is this a no go?

on the thunderbird it could be completely different, play around with the controls on it, use your ears, and see were it gets you. usually strumming near the bridge gives it more of a bark/snarl and strumming near the neck gives makes it a bit smoother, more "hoppus like" if you will.

American p-bass with quarter pounders (check into seymour duncan quarter pounders... that would be your best bet to get close to his sound)(also, Ernie ball hybrid slinky strings)

Just make sure you have enough treble and play with a pick.
