Getting The Band Back Together

- no gigs yet, for me.
- but i've provided/done production for three dates in august (out of state), all outdoors.
- i played an informal (house/residence) jam last night with a drummer and a guitar player.

our regular haunts/dives aren't having bands --- solos and duets only --- probably won't fire up again until next year or when it's 'healthy'. as a seven-piece band, indoors, we're into 'pariah' territory...has nothing to do with our music!

Sounds about the same as here, only small acts are playing out at all.

Yeah, Don is notoriously cheap...

He loves him some old Jefferson Airplane, though. We are (were) in there twice a year, mainly, I think, so he can hear Jane sing “White Rabbit” and “Somebody To Love.”

One band has fizzled. A couple of members in households with high risk people. Not worth it.

The other band has tried virtual jamming to no avail. Believe me, we’ve tried and it’s no go. I’m the high risk person in this group, so I’m setting myself up in an iso booth (aka furnace room) to mitigate any risk. Running a Mini snake to The board, getting a headphone feed back. Still have yet to do that, so this is theoretical at the moment.

the first band is just a good time/jamming band, not serious and no gigs. We’ve all done our penance in gigs over the decades.

Second band is more of a recording/original music project. Maybe 2 gigs per year, so no rush to get back to doing anything. We’re in the composing stage right now and that can be done both virtually and asynchronously.

I feel sorry for folks who don’t have the skill set or equipment to participate virtually and need the in-person group to make anything happen. Those are the folks that seem to be taking this hard. And of course those who do this for a living!

I feel zero compulsion to get together to just rehearse tunes we’ve done a thousand and one times just to “keep fresh”.

Are you familiar with a band out of Windsor Locks, the Savage Brothers?
I was their bassist for 17 years before I moved to Florida
I’d probably still be with them otherwise

I sure do. You guys were top dogs, no question! when we first came on the scene in 2015. Savage Brothers got the best gigs, best crowds.

We have also been pretty much on hiatus since March. There is an annual neighborhood beach gig that we've done the last 5 years in Oct., that was iffy, then cancelled. Then the Preakness was re-scheduled on the same day as the party. We were approaching Phase 3 around here (MD), then that backed off until the numbers stabilized after Labor Day. I reached out to the guys and suggested if weather cooperates we just do a small BYOB beach gig to keep the tradition and not tie it to anything else. Our singer and myself have continued to work on a few new tunes over the break but COVID has really kept the band at a distance. Anyway...
It's looking like a go, weather providing that we can play outside. I was thinking about sending some recordings of the new material around when I found the Band Lab app, seems to work pretty well.

I created a band and invited everyone and added recordings of the new song arrangements. Fingers crossed, we don't have a lot of time to practice the new stuff before the date - I'm hoping this will be good way to work with everyone at a distance. I am looking forward to playing with everyone again, but it's got to be safe.
