So, today I went to guitar center and played a Gibson SG bass. Saying I was dissapointed is an understatement. I was liking some mexican Fenders more than the Gibson. Anyone else feel this way or am I just a bass outcast?

Maybe Gibsons just aren't your thing, or maybe GC's setup of the bass was poor. I'm always underwhelmed by Fenders, but it in no way makes me a bass outcast... unless I missed that memo...

I will agree with ya that the new stuff they put out isn't up to speed. but that said I would chose my 72 EB3 over any other bass in the world....
well except for maybe an EB2

I love Gibsons and I've never been a fan of the EBs. Give me a Les Paul, T-Bird, RD, or Grabber and I'll be a happy kid. Funny because I consider Jack Bruce as an influencer. Huh.

Even with flats this bass would still, sadly, be of poor quality

I've never had quality issues on the half dozen different ones i've tried, all on walls of Separate Guitar Centers....

Again, for me, the fretwork was bad. The frets not only protruded BUT they were buried under gloss (as if the neck was glossed with the bad fretwork in place).
The Eb-3 was king of the hill back in the late 60's......The Cream's Jack Bruce played a Gibson and it was the sound. I have a Gibson TBird and I am amazed in love with it. However for everday playing I drive a Fender P......Just the way it is...
Tell you the truth I think Gibsons are WAAAAAY overpriced. Although I played an Epiphone EB-0 I believe it was (SG with the one neck pickup?) And I LOVED it. The low end on that thing was amazing compared to a lot of basses I've tried. I'm thinking of going Billy Sheehan and sticking one of those things on my P bass.....
I purchased a new epiphone T bird in august. I played the gibson sg and the gibson Tbird as well as many other guitars that day. The epiphone was far superior to the gibsons inho!
I have a Gibson SG bass, one of the cheaper models with the satin finish. QC on mine is just fine. SG's are quirky basses, though, with their 30" scale, and their one-of-a-kind tone/sound. I have smaller hands, so the scale length is no problem, but getting the sound I want out of that bass takes some work. I find myself constantly messing with the amp's eq, trying to get it to sound like my other basses. The SG has its own vibe, I guess, which is cool, but having to constantly mess with the eq, trying to obtain the tone I want, keeps me from playing it more. My SG is probably one of the least-used basses in my collection.
I have a SG 2010 Standard Bass (Not faded) and I have to add that this is the best bass I have ever owned, build quality is top notch, I use Chromes on it, It took the chromes 3 month to brake in, but now I have a killer sound. I can not recognize any of the bad quality things named in this thread. OK it sounds like a Gibson but that is what i like about it. I have a MM Sting Ray but never uses it, I only play my Gibson and could not be happier.
I had an SG, sold and purchased an SG supreme--best bass that Gibson has ever turned out--light as a feather, kicks like am mule and will blow away pretty much any production bass out there
That is a humidity issue, my friend.
Not REALLY defending Gibson - i don't even own one, but, guitars that hang up on walls all day long, the neck wood shrinks, and the frets, being metal, do not.
Usually its up to the shop to solve this, but we all know how that can end up.
I've also played loads of USA Fenders and a few Nice Warwicks that had this problem at a music store in Northern Virginia.
I just picked up a 1979 Grabber G-3. I had played one in the late 80s and fell in love, but never owned one. I do now, and boy.....it sure is fat, and I think quite versatile. But then again, I feel that way about all OLDER basses.
