Gibson Ripper- Fretted vs. Fretless Value

Greeings all,

I was thinking about trading my 1978 sunburst gibson ripper for a 1976 fretted, but wasn't sure if the value is the same. I looked in the most recent price guide and i couldn't find a mentioning of a fretless value... The guy I'm trading to wants 200-300 cash included which seemed a little strange, I know fretless rippers are more rare so i thought they might even be worth a little more, or at least the same value.

If anyone can help me find out the value, that would be great.

Hmm I wish I knew a little more on Gibson vintage but I usually see rippers,grabbers,g3's for about 800 and as low as 600, but if they're both in good condition ,I don't see why you would have to add cash,its not like fretless devalues the bass. Honestly if the guy wanted your fretless bass,he wouldn't ask for any cash, it seems like he'd rather sell his but if you make it worth his while he'd trade and make some cash and most likely sell yours after.

Tell him 'Even Steven' or no deal. I used to be a Ripper owner and long time player of one, which qualifies me for absolutely nothing, but I agree with trunkshope6, that it sounds like he's just not too keen about your fretless.

Unless it's been defretted, then there is no reason to have to pony up more cash, especially that much.

Technically they should be the same, but actually fretless Rippers tend to go for less than fretted ones.

They are rarer, but it is a simple supply and demand thing. Currently fretless basses are not as desireable as fretted, and vintage fretless players are rarer still.

I sold a fretless Ripper a year or two back and it wasn't anywhere as easy to sell as a fretted one.

Fretless Rippers are probably not the best thing to put on ebay with a low starting price.

He probably thinks that since his is a little older, it has more value. Trade straight across.
