Double Bass Gig Bag Comparison

Amateur Jazzer here. I'm buying a new gig bag because the inside of my previous one has deteriorated significantly leaving a black coat of small fine fuzz all over the bass requiring massive cleaning after unsheathing.

Now I'm looking to buy a new gig bag, but I don't gig heavily. I have a wheel and also a car so I basically just need some basic protection as I transport. There are a lot of bags out there but no good easy way to compare between them. Basically I'm looking to pay less than $175, but I'm wary of the $50 ones because that's what I have now and it internally melted.

Here's some that seem reasonable.

Any preferences out there for any bags? Any ones to look out for in particular?

I have a bobelock bag and it's been great through 8 years of roughly weekly gigging. The zipper is starting to go down near the bottom, where I have a kc strings angle block, and I'm planning to take it to a luggage repair place to see if they can modify it. Otherwise it's been excellent

I prefer bobelock bags. Cool.. stylish..durable. I got it at a great price too!

Hi guys,
When selecting a double bass bag, how snug should it be? Especially at the bridge area?
Thanks,

I have a Dave Messina bag that fits pretty tight. Dave had me send him the dimensions of: upper and lower bouts, rib depth, body length, height of bridge and overall length. He adds very little and ends up with a snug fit.
Hope this helps.

Expensive and heavy, I've been going on 8 years with my Soundwear Performer bag. Starting to show wear. One of the plastic D rings broke on one of the shoulder straps and was replaced. I'll probably get another one once this one goes but I doubt that will be for a while as I'll probably keep patching this thing up.

I would say about the bobelock that when I first got it I thought it was not enough. The padding didn't seem dense enough. There are more protective bags out there. But I've been gigging with this bag for 8 years, and the bass has only been damaged while OUT of the bag, and so I have to assume it's protective enough for me.

I went to the local shoe repair guy and he says he can fix the zipper for $15.

One thing maybe worth considering is how the bag stores. The bobelock takes up a lot of space even when folded up, but it's more compressible and flexible than a more densely padded bag would be.

I've only been playing for about 5 months, and have only owned this for that amount of time, so take this fwiw:

I own the Lemur bag and it's done a great job of protecting my bass to and from wherever I've needed to take it. It's got rubber on one side with some tread on it for when you need to lay it down and plenty of pockets for what I need. If you can deal with the big lemur on the front of it it's worth consideration. I haven't had any issues with it as of yet.

i bought my wife a cushy/heritage bass case 5 years ago,, it has wheels on the bottom and plenty of storage and handles, we throw that thing in the back of the pick up or the back of her CRV alot!.. it has held up more then well. good zippers and good padding. heavy rubber or leather at all critical points.

The bag I got with my new bass is the HEAT. I believe it's 120 bucks made here in China. Backpack straps, dense padding, nice heavy zippers, solidly made. Very pleased. You can get one from them, and they'll ship it quickly.
