Gig bag recommendations welcome (under $100)

I’m trying to choose a more basic, portable, lower profile gigbag but it’s been so long since I’ve purchased one it seems that there are many new, different models available.
If it fits a P bass, it’ll fit anything I have

my current gig bag is a reunion blues continental, I think , and it offers great protection.
It’s also HUGE and bulky (and heavy)

what do you guys recommend as a lighter duty alternative in the sub $100 category?
Levys? Gator? Etc.
Storage and good zippers are a plus

If you like a clamshell style bag, and I do for all the reasons you mentioned. This is about as good as I've found. It has the softer style of foam that won't self support so, that's kind of a bummer. If it had the more rigid foam that MONO uses, I would buy ten of them.

Try the Gator Transit. It’s offers good protection, it’s light, low profile and fits a P-bass perfectly. If you can find it, get the new model where the shoulder straps are attached directly to the bag instead of the old-style plastic clips.

I’d second the Gator Transit. I have one for acoustic guitar, for the money it’s pretty good.

The Ibanez is well constructed but offers very little protection, I got mine under $40

The road runner double (2 basses) is about $70 and I often use it with one bass, and it’s my favorite gig bag. It’s not excessively bulky, but protects well.

The Gator Transit is Good. I just bought a bass that came with one. I also would highly recommend .for $25 more a Protec Contego. Remember you get what you pay for.

Yes I do understand but I already have two of the reunion blues continental gig bags which are incredibly protective but very cumbersome for light duty
I am looking for low profile

It’s an excellent bag, but by all accounts also heavy. Thomann lists the weight as 3.6 kilos. By contrast, the Transit weighs in at about 2.2 kilos. Since the OP is looking for something for light duty, the Contego might be on the hefty side.

About 20 years ago I ordered one of the "house brand" gig bags from Musician's Friend -- at the time they offered three different levels of quality; this was the highest quality best gig bag, and it was still under $50!!! -- and if they still offer anything like that, even if it's up to $100 now, that would be my first choice. It doesn't offer any of the structural support or reinforcements that modern hybrid bags (ProTec Contego, Sadowsky PortaBag, Mono M80, etc.) do, it's just a heavy-duty canvas or Cordura bag with incredibly thick foam padding, like 2" thick all around, and then some really nice soft fluffy lining. Awesome bag. Fifty bucks!


Edit: Well, I just checked the Musician's Friend site, and they no longer carry anything remotely like what I got 20 years ago, so nevermind.

ProTec Contego is my most used gig bag btw, and if you can get one of them for close to $100 that should be a no-brainer.

Those are formerly the bags Dingwall used. It's the exact bag. They're good!

If "formerly," then not by much. The D-Roc I got in November came in a Music Area bag.

You're correct. It's their 2019 model. However, I don't see it on their website for separate purchase.

I have one and I like it just because it won't self support. Makes it easier to tuck away discreetly on a crowded stage.

yep. I like it better once the bass is out of it myself as well. It's an easy toss under the drum riser

Last night, I found one on Amazon, a slightly used customer return -- for $54 (shipping and tax included)! Had to snag it.
