Gigging amp under 600

So my band is going to start playing some shows pretty soon.. The only problem is I have a p bass into 50 watt Genz Benz combo... Its loud enough for practice (barely) but im afraid it wont be loud enough for gigs. Were an Alt rock, punk band (think gnr and rancid). I just want a decent tone, I need power more than tone at this point. I hear used peaveys are good for the price, so ive been looking on craigslist for em. Spotted a couple peavey 300 combos, for pretty cheap ($200 to $350) im kind of clueless when it comes to how many watts I need however, we'll be playing probably bars and parties so under 200 people at a gig.

Im willing to spend up to $600.

Any help would be much appreceited! :)

One of those Peaveys might be all you need, but your $600 could end up buying you a fairly nice used stage rig.

I'd suggest you expand your search and start checking all your craigslist's (all classifieds) within a few hundred mile radius.
I'd consider calling every pawn shop and music store in that radius too.
(a true bargain is sometimes well worth spending that extra $100 in gas)

This seems to be a good time to find deals on used band gear, I've seen a bunch of smokin bargains on craigslist's all around my area lately. For some strange reason, seems like an awful lot of people are being forced to quickly dump their quality used gear right now...

The peavey combos are heavy.

The Nitrobass and Firebass heads are heavy too, but at least you can break it down into two trips with a cab and make it manageable.

I found a Nitrobass for $199+$30 shipping and a 2x12 cab for $368 shipped. $597 for a decent 300 watt rig. It will do 450 with another 4 ohm cab.

The old Mark III, IV, VI series Peaveys are good too, but they're starting to get OLD, even for Peaveys.

Thats a pretty nice deal actually. Hmm, maybe I can get a Nitrobass head or somthing and run it through one of those acoustic cabs. Thnx for the suggestions keep em coming!

I think im going to check out the acoustic cabs, if they still work well ill buy em. Thanks for your time anders, those are some nice deals. Although that head looks really worn, I think im just going to get a good cab for now, then go for a nice head a little later. Thanks for everyones help!

You just have to keep your options open...and if you don't need it right away, waiting is the best! A Denver guy started a Hartke 8-10 cab at $500 4weeks ago and now its $300. If I needed an 8-10" cab, I would be all over it. Also, a used Avatar just came up locally. A 4-10" for $100...once in a lifetime deal. I just wish I had some cash right now. It prob wont be there long. Just keep you eye on craigslist. You will, find the gold crown eventually.
