Gigging vs jamming?

Do you play for the playing or play because you want to be playing in public?

You omitted the third option - money. Playing in public does nothing much for me now and if it wasn't for the money I wouldn't bother. Take the money out of the equation and I would be happier just getting together with some friends for a blow every now and then.

The ONLY reason I play in public anymore, is that I keep getting calls... I'd rather play on the porch with good friends, good food and a few beers.

I recently took 6 months off from gigging (left a band). I joined another in December. Didn't touch a bass for the entire 6 months. i love to gig (and get paid). Just jamming, not so much. I get invited to jam but generally would rather spend my time doing something else.

Jam. That's what got me started. Making "noise" with friends. Keyword: friends. Done the bands, the drama, the low paid gigs and unending "practice" with people who were not friends - some were even not friendly! I still get together with my first drummer and a guitarist/vocalist a few times a year and we drink beer and make noise.
We first played together 35 years ago.
