I seriously think you could play "young people music" and make it work. Just work with a younger singer. It's not like you have a whole lot of competition from younger bassists who want to play Rick Ross songs.
There's nothing to fear. Rick Ross is fat, bald, and old enough to be the father of half his fanbase. I mean, yeah, there are limits to how far you can push your luck, but try. I remember you had a thread not long ago about electronic drums, right?

It seems to me that bands with a theme to be easier to book than a general cover band.

Heh... That reminds me of just how easy it is for young female singers to draw a fanbase. It helps if the band is any good, but you'll still get a crowd even if you're pretty terrible as a band. A hot female singer in her early 20s will ALWAYS draws a crowd. Always.

Would a Grateful Dead tribute band do well in Wisconsin? You may need to move to the Pacific Northwest, in addition to growing a beard and a beer belly. You may not have to take up a dope smoking habit if you're playing either Phil Lesh's or Bob Weir's part. Otherwise, it would help if you smoked weed, too.

At least you'd never have to have that "is a band's image important" argument with the other guys in the band! Just show up in flip flops, a tie-dye t-shirt and shorts and you got "the look..."
