It's a great sounding amp and with good speakers you can get some fantastic bass sounds and you sure won't be lacking in power.

I wouldn't take Flea's sound as an example of how the 2001 sounds. It's a very versatile amp and will get a lot of other good sounds. I used the GK2000 for live gigs for over a year. Great sounding amp, but I just didn't need all that power. So I downsized. But if you need that power, and like the GK sound, and pair it up with good speakers that can handle a bit of juice, you're going to be very happy.

Also here is some sound clips of me playing the 2001RB through an AMpeg 610HLF. However I soon blew all the speakers in the Ampeg so please take 62Bass's comment seriously. This amp is seriously powered and will have the cleanest low end you will ever hear. I have switched to a GK NEO412 since....be very careful about your speaker selection.

Don't comment on my "ok" playing ...but you will hear it is a very clean, powerful amp. Also, the amp sounds alot punchier and even better in person. I guarantee my camcorder mic cannot pickup all the tone gushing from this amp.

Please ignore the intro...my bass whammy is on in an octave harmony setting and it sucks my low end right out. Real tone starts at about 46 seconds...

I likethe GK DI as much as anyone but I seriously doubt that a band like Tool is going to use that or a mic as the sole bass source. I'm not sure that the bass you hear on their recordings is actually a 2001 in other words. More likely a really good DI and mic pre-amp combination.

Specifically....

"Barresi captured Justin Chancellor's bass tracks with a combination of cabinet miking and DI. Chancellor played through Gallien-Krueger heads and Mesa Boogie cabinets. One amp was set to a clean tone and the other had a dirty sound. They were separated trackwise, so they could be blended at any point later. Barresi used Neumann U47 FET microphones on both cabinets. Additionally, Chancellor's bass went through a Demeter DI box directly to the console."

"Barresi used minimal processing when recording. “I tried to get by with as little as possible,” he says. “There was no EQ on guitar. There was really no EQ on the bass either."


What you are hearing on this album is mostly the GK tone through Mesa cabs (8x10 and 4x12) mic'd with a badass Neumann Mic that is now out of production. The only DI was his demeter. The DI tone of the 2001RB is not very good. You lose all the punch...Yeah the demeter helps in the "clean punch" dept but the last two albums JC also used the Demeter and his sound was no where near where it is today. In the bass player Mag where they interviewed him he explicitely stated that it was the GK2001RB that changed his tone....
