First off, I searched a bit on this topic and it seems like not much was relevant with my strange problem so I'm here to post it in hopes of getting help for you guys. Thank you in advance.
I bought a used GK 400RB IV recently and got a great deal. Have used it for less then a month. Running it through either Ashdown Mag210 or/and Mag410. Both of these at 8ohm cabs.
Bass used: MIM Jazz bass with Norstrand noiseless pickups recently installed. Done myself but I feel I did a good job at soldering and it has been working fine for the last 2 weeks with the 400rb. Bass works fine with another amp, tested it today.
Alright so at first the 400rb worked perfectly fine no problem at all even when pushing it quite far for the last 2 weeks. Yesterday I turned on the amp and got this very loud humming noise (feels like the speakers could take damage and hurts ears) and the clipping light on the input was glowing. Turning down the pickups would just change the tone of the clipping hum. The only option that let me use the amp was to put the -14dB pad. Which would remove the problem all together strangely....
Today I practiced with my band and since this is currently the only rig I have that's loud enough I was using it even though this problem was occuring. So I turned on the amp and its still doing the same ear shattering noise and clipping light is on when the -14db pad is disengaged, so I turn the pad on and just turn myself up and its fine with no clipping or problem. The thing is after about 15-20 minutes I checked the amp again and it was working fine without the pad (passive bass mode)... no more hum or clipping problem.
Whats the problem here? Do I just need to wait until it warms up a lot or something? Or is there a bad contact somewhere like the input jacks or something. It could possibly be my bass, but I don't have another bass to try out with this amp, only another amp to test the bass. Help please... whats wrong? Why is this happening?
