GK 700RB (not II)

Does anybody have any setting suggestions about how to limit the distortion/ clipping on the GK 700RB. I'm not even getting the volume to halfway before it begins. It really starts flapping when dropping low E's- G's regardless of cabinet used- Ampeg HLF SVT 4x10 or Ampeg B115E 1x15. I'm playing with active EMG's- could that be part of the cause or are these known for this type of issue?
