GK MB115 problems (please help)

ok B-string I was playing around with the headphone out.
I left it empty for a while.

I was listening to the headphone output... it seems to work ok... no distortion.. It is a little quiet, but it works and sounds pretty good. which means the problem is not affecting the headphone out after all.... so does this mean that the problem is for sure the crossover?

Does the crossover look ok in the pics? I took some extra pictures of what I believe to be the crossover section. Again you can check out the pics here Pictures by meinl - Photobucket

Left with two possibles now (as I can see without the full schematic and the unit in front of me) 1) Bad lead wire connection from the connector that plugs into the head down to the woofer. 2) The mute relay (black rectangular plastic componet) is faulty.
Unless.....you didn't get curious and open it up to take a look and reverse the plugs going to the woofer and horn? The horn switch may not handle the current needed for the woofer? I won't tell ;)
If you have a multi meter (DVM, VOM or DVOM) we can go through how to check the leads.

Hey, after seeing those pics something occurred to me. I have an RBH cab with a crossover in it that has a similar looking "resistor?" It's the big chicklet looking orange thing. Twice now it has vibrated loose of it's solder points and once completely broke and fell out. All due to long term transport vibrations. Double check that connection...it might be a trouble spot.

+1 to what he said. It would really help if you can measure the actual line voltage at your location. If it's dropping down to 100 volts or lower, it could cause a problem. I've seen that happen before even here in the states.

Email or call GK, explain that you're out of the con US and ask for a schematic so you can get it worked on locally. They should provide you with one.

Ok I hoping I can figure out what the problem is in the next couple days. I will email those guys. Thanks for the contacts :)

if worse comes to worse I can take it to the music shop tp get repaired. There is one music shop here in the city. They will ship it to another city to where the shop is. The shop is authorized for Roland, peavey, and a couple of other brands... but the yguy at the music store had never heard of GK...:eyebrow: (great to know) ;)

I don't think that would be expensive since labor here is really cheap compared to the states... but I am really hoping to figure out what the problem is. I will have lots of time tomorrow. Right now there is a little baby around... and well sensitive little eardrums and sudden loud sounds don't work too well together... not to mention that loud farty noises from amp testing don't ussualy induce sleep all though you never know....:D:smug:

Well after some testing yesterday. (no baby in the house so loud noises are fine)
I FIGURED OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS!!! :hyper::hyper::hyper:

I plugged the speaker into another amp and well it was trebly and then when you turn it up loud it gets distorted and it still doesn't
t handle bass.
So all of last week when everything in the amp seemed to be working fine and connected right it was.
I had the bass amp power a sub and it worked and sounded fine.

Now what though?
the speaker is really messed up and it sounds like maybe it is blown. The is no cosmetic damage. How would flying damage an speaker? Did the magnet get messed up.

When I bought and old bag end cab back in the states the cone was and dustcover had a large tear in it. that sounded distorted but it still responded.
From the Gk driver you can hear treble well and the bass is nonexistent until it has a lot of watts running into it and then the bass farts out and is very distorted....:eyebrow::rollno:

So I really don't see why a brand new driver is doing this...

So I guess its time to get a different driver. any recommendations?

Hey sorry it took so long toget back I have been in the mountains all week... (no internet)

ok I gave him an email thanks for the contact.
I suppose that could happen hmmm I can take a closer look at the driver... (please be something simple!) :smug:

the question is what kind of bass driver do they have in the music store here... I am hoping they have more than car speakers and that its not to over priced..
then back to the :bassist::bassist::bassist:

Yes it I don't think it should have either and it is a crap shoot sticking a driver in especially down here.

AI just found out there is one GK dealer in Honduras? maybe they repair???? its an 8 hour drive from here though:eyebrow: but I have some friends going soon so they can probably take it therei f they do indeed do repairs.

Well I went to the music store today.... and I got a driver :hiding:

it worked out fairly well though I brought the GK combo in and something happened that would definitely not happen in the states
about 5 guys (workers) gathered around it and grabbed some screw drivers. They took of the front. Then one of them felt the driver in a couple places which made me a little nervous, but hey it is a foreign country...
then me and three others went to a back room. We took out the driver and they looked over it for a couple minutes and then they told me the magnet was bad or messed up as I had suspected and 5 string suggested.
Then they went and grabbed a woofer it was crown and peavey driver. they stuck it in and screwed it in. Then we plugged it in and started playing. I still at this moment did not know the price. I was hoping under $120, but I though it could probably be $150. well it ended up being $40 :hyper::hyper::hyper:

ok so it does not sound as good. It doesn't have as much mids and it has a LOT of bass. So I am guessing it probably goes lower than the intended driver.
I plan on getting the GK replacement driver. I will take it back to the States with me and drop it off at a repair place and then bring the replacement when I come back.
But for $40 the bass amp works and sounds pretty decent. and the :bassist::bassist::bassist: can continue.

I think it was pretty cool that happened at the store you sure don't get that service in most places in States anymore.

A good deal, 40 bucks and you're up and running. Like you said, that will get you by till you can get the correct driver.

Do you have any update on your problem? I have a similar problem. I owned an MB 115 for 2 years. It worked perfectly for about 18 months. Lately, it begins to distort and cut in and out severely after it has warmed up. When this problem occurs it only does it through the on board speaker. the signal going through direct out port is clean on the PA mains. I think that both of our amps are suffering from a problem in the same section.
