GK MB200 Hiss

(I'll update this thread after I make my exchange)

I got a response in fairly short order. It was pleasant enough and apologetic but played fairly straight and close. There was no comment on the issue itself.

The suggestion was that if I'm still in the Musician's Friend return policy period, I should contact MF for an exchange. If I am unable exchange it, then I should contact GK back about sending it in for repair. That's it.

I do want this to work out. I'll post the results of my exchange for another unit.

I think GK is definitely moving in the right direction. I was pretty blown away by that MBFusion800 prototype, and while I didn't play it myself, was also impressed with the little MB200 I heard at NAMM. I am one who is not particularly impressed with the 'consistency' of production with the micro line, but that move to US production (not that it has to do with 'US' is better, but rather having production under a more 'constant' watchful eye) is IMO a wonderful step.

Received the MB200 on Saturday. Unpacked it and fired it up. Mine is dead quiet!
I played for about an hour and a half - experimented with different settings - still quiet.

I was able to get hiss when I turned both the gain and treble all the way up but no worse than a lot of other amps or pre's at those settings.

Overall a GREAT little amp IMO. Great tone. Took me just a few minutes to get "my tone".

Who did you order from?

Also curious, does your cabinet have a high frequency driver?

I fired up the same combo last night and came to the same conclusion as you. :)

Mine is on its way back to MF, so we have no idea what will really become of it. When I contacted GK about this, they said to do the exchange with MF.

If the second one has the same problem, I'm leaning toward a refund and chalking the whole thing up in the life's too short category.

Yeah, I know. This is why the exchange thing with MF probably won't be the fastest way to get into a quiet one if they have to go through a lot of their stock of MB200's before one of the "fixed" ones finally started making it out. I'm sure this is a temporary situation. Just kinda unfortunate it happened at all.

If you were interested, however, I'd see about contacting GK with the next one and letting them actually work on it and get you a quiet one once and for all. Seems like it is a known quantity and it can be dealt with.
