GK rails in a pedal?

No one is blaming you for logo theft and your pedal looks nice. I am also happy to hear that you like the circuit that's inside the box.

What I find funny is that he is afraid of EHX, but not of GK who has as much, if not more, resources to crush him with the laws. Maybe he felt that only a few units wouldn't expose him to the wrath that a large corporation can inflict upon him... that's kind of the sentiment that I am seeing in these posts. But, that doesn't excuse him from theft.

I understand why people would want to pay tribute to a brand that they really like by putting the logo on items. Heck, I have put brand and band stickers on my guitar cases.

I said in a previous post that I do not have a dog in this fight and I promise that I am not dissin' you or Greg for what the builder did.

BTW, I did ask John about this a while ago (look for my posts in his threads) and he said that he only uses logos/artwork on the pedals that he keeps for himself. So I believe that is totally a different situation.

Now, let's get back to hearing more clips of this pedal.

It's still copyright infringement regardless of if you keep the pedal for yourself. I should know, I have a business that etches things off the internet as well as original designs obviously. There are obviously loop holes, but you could get sued for even using the same font as another company if they own that font. This is why I've actually been toying with the idea of going only custom and not offering that service anymore to anyone. It's too risky. I don't want to get sued a 100k for using some dumb image.

That being said, I seriously, seriously doubt GK would give a crap. I mean, I could be wrong, but I doubt it. In any case, you can always ask for permission to use the logo as well. If they say no, then you don't. Simple as that.

I've read the copyright laws very thoroughly, so I can ensure you I am correct for the United States at least. They are a bit silly in some cases, but man, that's some scary poopie (hahahah I wrote poopie).

I would love one of these pedals and just have something cool put on it. Like totally abstract. That's the best route IMO.

Another question: what's the "official" name for this thing? I've seen it called plenty of stuff, but what should I call it when I'm singing its praises? There doesn't seem to be a consistent name floating around...

In the early 80's I worked as an electronic tech at a photo lab. It was one of those high volume labs that would do 24hr processing for drug stores, but it also did a lot of ancillary work for reprints, enlargements, posters and such. We would to get portraits from customers that were originally shot in a professional studio or yearly school photos, where they wanted a copy made. We were not allowed to copy these portraits because the original negative was owned by the portrait studio/photographer. But, if the customer was to take their own photograph of the portrait and bring us the negative to work with, then all was OK.

So this copying of protected work for yourself only, is a grey area violation that has no teeth and is easily dismissed by legal judgment. Otherwise, every guy that has taken their old VW and put official Corvette badges on it could be sued.

That being said, I seriously, seriously doubt GK would give a crap. I mean, I could be wrong, but I doubt it. In any case, you can always ask for permission to use the logo as well. If they say no, then you don't. Simple as that.

Also as a GK artist endorser, I know those guys over there and I'm sure they would not like to see that.....

I agree, but! There are some artist that are very frivolous. LOL. I've read some horror stories. I wish I could just buy rights to certain images. That would be awesome. Like good ones that everyone likes. I know there's sites you can do that, but for the most part they are pretty lame IMO. Some are cool but not that cool. haha.

The OP was the one that was looking for a GK Rails tone, so maybe we should let him decide what it should be called officially. I do like "Rails" or "GK Rails", because it was the objective of the project. I also like the "800RB POWER AMP SIM" that Dom has on his builds.

Originally I had planned to put a Simpsons graphic on it and call it the "choo choo choose you" in relation to the Ralph and Lisa valentines episode. This was to go with another Simpsons based pedal I have in the works. But probably won't go there due to copyright issues

Alright, all this talk has gotten me on a (not quite) tangent. I know there was talk on this thread about how to get "the growl" (hitting the rails) the old fashioned way before this pedal was made. And I know there's TONS of information and misinformation on the subject, so I got to knob fiddling. I thought I had this growl figured out, but maybe not. I'm literally taking notes on this, so I can remember it this time! There are so many conflicting ways the get "the growl" I can't remember anymore. So, how do I get the growl sans pedal? Thanks as always, gentlemen!

I find it helps to clear your throat first, 'cause if you don't some phlegm or catarrh may obstruct a good clean growly tone. It also helps if you imagine what sort of growl you're going after ... a chihuahua vs a raccoon vs a cougar vs a Kodiak Grizzly, vs space alien etc ... choose the animal, then think like "be the animal", use your diaphragm and release the growl from the core of your animal being, not from your upper chest or worse from your head, those tones are wimpy and nasally respectively.

Hey guys. I wanted to share that I've been able to move the jacks to the top without too much fuss by using smaller parts.

For the DIY'ers out there, here's what I'm using:

-Neutrik Slim Jacks (The nut isn't included so get them Invalid Link Removed.)
-Bourns 9mm Invalid Link Removed& Invalid Link Removedpots. (The 9mm pots from Small Bear would work just as well but I needed knurled posts.)
-Slimline DC jack from BLMS (Also at Small Bear here.)
-Compact 3PDT footswitches from BLMS.

A few people have asked about the knobs. I get from Technobots, a UK-based store. They come in two parts: the Invalid Link Removedand the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

BTW, I don't recall ever loosing an Indian-Leg-Wrestle match — 6'5" and getting most of my height from my femur gives me some leverage.

Well, I get my 800RB to growl by cranking the boost all the way up, turning up the input pretty high (about noon) and then using the master to reach my desired volume level. I also play pretty hard. It mellows out when I play finger style for more delicate stuff. I play P basses too. That may help.

Ok, GK club answered my growl question first. Here is the answer from a well-respected TB'er who has helped me out many times. I put it in my own simpleton's terms so that anyone could understand, because I had to ask for clarification and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would have!

So, in summation for anybody coming across this later

For GK Growl:
1. Crank input/volume knob to just before clipping. This will drive the poweramp hard.
2. Set boost to taste.
3. Set master/woofer knob for overall volume.

For GK Cleans:
1. Crank master/woofer knob.
2. Set boost to taste.
3. Set input/volume knob for overall volume.
