GK2001RB cab advice

I’m about to pull the trigger but thought I’d look for some last minute advice to sway me one way or the other (based on TB’er reviews/ opinions I’m leaning toward an RBH4x10 – one currently in the classifieds plus RMC gave me a decent quote);

I use to use a super-redhead, but on the last couple gigs I could not hear myself and swore never again - so I just scored a decent deal from JGR on a GK 2001RB.

Couple more days and I should have that beast in my hands - I’m looking fwd to being told to turn down!
(some background - I play in a loud cover band (current radio rock/ 80’s stuff), medium hockey rink type venues up to 1000 people, always w/ decent PA support. Mainly use a 2500 G&L, (but also an active Ibanez SDGR1000 and an active 80’s Larrivee) – usually finger, sometimes w/ pick).

I have a custom EV15 loaded box (8ohm) I’d like to keep…..(may provide some of the wool and take some edge off the GK sound many complain of) …..so now looking for a 4x10 cab (8ohm) or some other configuration to make sure I cut through the mix!

GK Neo 2x12 mentioned in several posts but I need something before a Dec 6 gig so that one’s out while GK is reconfiguring.
Mesa powerhouse 2x12 currently in the classifieds – not many reviews around. Plus I'm concerned about little boxes farting out.....something my redhead did a lot.

Not many used Schroeders about…..a local guy has the 4x10R and says soundmen keep telling him to turn down – apparently cuts well through the mix? May be a bit pricey, plus our Canuck dollar’s gone down relative to US$

Plus it all has to fit in a Ford Escape...so the GK 4x12 is out.

Also part of the problem is I’m just north of the US/ Canada border in a small town…..GC in Spokane, WA about 3.5 hours away, Bass Northwest about 8 hours so difficult to demo much…..So I’m hoping you guys can help a brother out!

Our endorsers who play the 2001RB use either the 410RBH, Neo410 or Neo412.

How's that? Ask a question and the president of GK chimes in. Cool huh? I'm a big fan of the old 800rb's and the newer 700's and 1001's and haven't heard them sound bad through any cab save for some POS. Never played a 2001 though. I assume it's the same, just more power.

Hey Warren,

My favorite cabs with this head are the Bag End S15-D's. It kills through a pair of them and is loud as hell. The Bags aren't your typical 15's - they have great mids and top end, and are punchy like 10's. They also handle the power well. This head has some serious speaker shreding ability, so make sure whatever you get can handle it!

I run the 1001RBII, but I'd suggest the 4x10 RBH myself (or two of them I suppose for the 2001 head and if you really have to tear the house down).

I currently have an older 4x10 SBX Plus myself, but if I end up getting another cab, it'll be the RBH. The RBH has the same speakers as mine but is ported which gives an absolutely monster output in the lower and mid bass region (45 to like, 70 hz).

The sealed cabs have a little smoother rolloff of the low frequencies so you can get more low bottom out of them if you play a 5 or 6 string.

I find the 15" cabs don't have as good a transient response as the 4x10's, so they're a little muddier. Keep that in mind if you need a poppy/Jeff Berlin type tone. Good for reggae or blues tho.

BTW, some kudos for GK. I have 2 1001RBII's, both of which went down with preamp problems in the first year I had em. But the GK factory fixed em both under warranty for me. So far they're still both holding together after fixing....

I use a Schroeder 410R with my 2001RB and the two go together like lamb and tuna fish.... Spaghetti and meatball? You're more comfortable with that analogy? :p

I've owned and ran both a GK 4x12 and a Mesa PH 2x12 through my recently sold 2001rb, and both sound phenomenal. I loved the deep, tight, clear tones through the Mesa, but the GK 4x12 had a significantly more musical tone to it. Ultimately it wasn't the sound i want, the highs were too piercing/sharp from the Mesa's Neo speakers so she's being shipped out pretty quick. im keeping my 4x12, but id recommend either a GK 410RBH (deeper, fuller, more musical) or a Mesa PH410 (not neo speakers, but still tight)
