Because I've been flirting with migrating to short-scale, and it's stupid to spend money on a short-scale fretless when I can convert a long-scale to short and get an additional four "frets" on the top end to boot.

You will probably have do some stuff to really make it good, but one you do, it is a lot of bang for the buck.
Just oiled the board, installed a set of Chromes.
Those factory strings are crap, I'm getting better response with the slide harmonics.
I wish they were more audible , (due to crap pups, pots ??).

You definitely have to invest in new strings off the bat..
Best investment for starters...
I wish I could get better harmonic slides though.
Slight improvement with the new chromes..
Pickups perhaps , new Nut, bridge.
