I did- most of those were conservatories, and I auditioned for just the bass department. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said about instruments- I'm shopping for something I'll have for the rest of my education and early jobs (hopefully!) now, and I can't agree more about the importance.
One other thing to consider, is have a lesson with the teacher at the school your applying at- that will more often than not nullify any impact having a not expensive bass will have- if they see you play really well, but are in anyway limited by the equipment, they can take that into consideration. Heck, at the place I'm going to, I auditioned on the same day as a guy (now my roommate in my studio) with a $13,000 instrument.
