Going to be Starting a Build Soon. Primary Sketches inside

so i am going to attempt my first bass soon. my friend is good with tools and wood working (he makes canoes) so he will be helping me with the tough stuff. im not sure about string count yet its not going to be more than 5. i havent chosen the wood yet or anything for that matter. here's a quick sketch. the line you see going from the top horn down and around is going to be a groove that will act as a thumb rest. so any comments/suggestions? thanks

an idea i came up with pretty quick. its kind of a baby whale single cut but not totally?

Just a note about the thumb rest... That's a cool idea, but keep in mind that once you set that height and position, you're pretty much stuck with it. One of my basses has a thumbrest that's too short, but it's routed into the bass and not easily fixable. It's really annoying, because if I try to use it, my thumb rolls right off of it, and I can't just remove it because there would be a big gap. If you're going to go that route (har har), string it up before you finish it, so you can test it out, adjust the string height etc and make sure it works for you, and sand it down if needed.

what do u mean by too short? deep? i looked at where i play my bass and the common places i rest my thumb and drew the contour based of that. usually its the p-up or the little edge of the pick guard or the neck. depending on where im playing. i think the contour i drew will work for me but maybe not others. i do plan on testing the distance from the strings and stuff before i go that "route";) but thank you. any comments on the overall shape?

and im a bigger guy so i dont think that little edge will bother me too much. maybe if i was tapping down by the 3rd fret. but i dont do much of that haha. the way i wear my bass i dont think it would bother me. i wanted to bring the other lip thing on the other side by where the jack would be up more so it would make a defined place for my leg but im not sure yet

any other comments? im not sure how many knobs to put on. doesnt that depend on the pre and/or pickups? dont get me wrong, i have a lot of reading and research to do. so please dont bash me on how i dont know much. i just like to play. i never really got into the electronics. nothing more than knowing the different kind of p-ups really. is it lame to want to buy a premade neck? is it like a wuss way to make a bass? jw lol
