Good bass in the 250 dollar range?

+1,,,spend another $20 for a good set of strings and you will get a nice versatile bass that you can cover almost everything.

Thanks guys Alot of good suggestions it seems and it seems alot of you have similar opinions on a few. I do like the Jaguar bass and I noticed that one of my favorite metal bands bassist uses one (Troy Sanders from Mastodon). I might look into that although funny enough with the mention of the Jackson concert basses I have been looking at those and I am a huge fan of Dave Ellefson and really love his sound, not to mention he is a pick player like me and also plays thrash. Thank you to the person who mentioned the Line 6 150 watt amp too I will look into that as well. I was looking at a TC Electronic BG250 but I will spare going into a talk about amps here and might start another thread in the proper section. Thanks though guys

For $250, go for a used bass. Look for an Ibanez SR300 or above, nice slim neck which is great if you're coming off 6-string guitar.. It also has a decent variety of tones, with active EQ which makes it more flexible (plenty of "treble" if you need it).

Also, used Peaveys and the Yamaha BB series are always a good deal in the lower price range.

There are lots of good choices at this price point. My vote for a good inexpensive bass is the Jackson Kellybird, $299.00 shipped from Sweetwater. I have been collecting and playing for years (also building and restoration) and was so pleasantly surprised by this bass. I bought it on a whim. A bargain at 2x the cost. Excellent quality control, beautiful finish, flamed top, good hardware and pickups. The neck is amazing, slim fast, beautiful rosewood fingerboard and very nice fret work...............better than some $ 1,200 plus basses I have bought. I think it would be good for metal also

Can't recommend the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass to guys like you enough. Outstanding bass for the price. I play it much more than some of my pricier basses!

The passive jackson kellybird is ok, But for just $50 more you can get the better version with 3band active eq. Well worth the extra cash. If you want more regular body style with no neck diving, the JS3 for $349. Same pups and active 3band eq.

My vote is for the Music Man Sterling Sub 4. It plays really well and is very easy to setup. It has active electronics and a decent tonal spectrum.

Obbvious, but check out craigslist in your area - I found a sweet '93 MIK Jazz for $250 and my AMB200 for $200. Both are really solid instruments. There's a nice Jaguar Modern Player there now for $250 that I'm dying for but don't have the cash.
