Good beginner bass for Tool/isis type playing

I am looking to get a bass, i have played guitar for quite a while now, and am looking to get one that sounds and play decent, particularly for tool and isis. I am left handed, which narrows down my options quite a bit. The two i am looking at are these:

Which of these would be better for the type of stuff i am wanting? The sx has the MM style pickup, but it doesnt have a preamp so i dont know how much difference it would make. Also, would it be up to par with the squier as far as build quality?

I learned Tool on my P-bass. They play a lot of Drop-D, so I'd suggest a 4 string. Jazz would work well, too. You want a slightly treble-heavy sound, so use the bridge pick-up with the tone at about 7.

1- pre 2010 Indo or Korea ATKs, with triplecoil pickups and, on acoustics/chorus "perfect circle" moments, "phantom coil" option, unavailable with present double humbucker pickups;
2- really don't know if present ATKs are available lefthanded (which they once were, up until 310 models)

I agree with everything said above and would add the Ray34 from Sterling by MM. I don't own one myself but have played one and they sound like the real deal and have apparently excellent build quality (at least from the reports around TB).

I almost pulled the trigger on the Ray35 because of this. The only reason I didn't is because I decided to go with a Dingwall.

I would like to get the ray, but i am looking for something a little cheaper than that. That is the reason i have put those two basses on my list, is because they are cheap, and seem to be good. Any input between those two basses, or a bass of equal price about?

Too bad lefty ATK's are harder to come by. It would appear that used ATK's are around your range, actually.

Alright then go for Squier Vintage Modified '70s Jazz bass
Not a very good neck but a good overall bass, a great (and a lil' bit heavy) body, able to enhance neck resounding, and a pair of hot enough pickups
Nothing particularly remarkable, but you can't go wrong for its price.
