Good Flatwounds for Musicman Stingray

I can tell you from first hand experience that TI Flats sound fantastic on a 4 band Stingray or any EBMM.....

I've got La Bellas on my SR5 and they seem okay but I'm wondering if Chromes would sound better. Got a 5 string set of TI's that I was thinking of trying too.

I had a set of TIs on my SR5 and they were great. Ultimately went back to rounds as that was was more the sound I was looking for from that bass and I have a PBass with TIs that cover that need but wouldn't hesitate to use on SR5 again if it made sense.

Yeah I'm considering that as well, D'Addario EXL165-5 nickels sound real good on this bass IMO, got a new set of those hanging around too.

TI flats will suit your needs perfectly IMO. They sound rich and full on the G and D strings, and the low tension works great for your right hand positioning on the Stingray.

I'll second this. I have TI Flats on my Stingray Classic 5 (strung E-C) and they sound great.

Get a set of Ernie Ball conventional stainless flats to go on the 'Ray. They have a little bit of growl that the pickup will bring out in spades, and still get a nice feel and flats character whle retaining everything that makes a good 'Ray a good 'Ray.

Yessir. I have TI Flats on an HH Bongo, and it sounds superb.

I have GHS flats on my Ray 5 -- the sound is like a P bass on steroids. Deep lows with a percussive thump.

Fender Flats on my ray 5... with a D'addario round B string. Can't find a flat B I like.
Turn the bass's treble down. Bass up a TINY bit. ..... skat mid to taste. . Very versatile is the Ray5. One pick up. .but a huge array of tones innit

I just put Group 3 Ernie Ball flats on my Stingray 5 and is exactly what I had been looking for. Thickens up the D & G strings really nice, absolutely no fret noise. No mud at all. Just thick and growling.

I put an old set of Chromes (40-55-75-95) on my SR4H, replacing the stock (?) EB strings. That bass sounded perfect, ballsy, with depth and no earbleeding brightness.

Howdy,

I want my Stingray5 to sound a little more thumpy - like an old p bass - as much as possible.

I'm thinking as a last resort before I sell it, flatwounds could help.

Has anyone ever successfully added balls to their Musicman with flatwounds? And if so, which brand would you recommend? I got a Stingray 5 so it's gotta have 5 strings.

Keep in mind that the Special sounds different than the older models-- less harshness. Chromes on the older model would probably sound great. To my ears anyway LOL!

On my SR Special HH Chromes sounded muffled and not very musical. It’s been wearing a set of Cobalt Flats for the last few weeks, and it sounds much better...

One warning though— don’t try to make a Stingray sound like a P-bass; the Ray has its own thing going. If You need a P, but don’t want to part with much money, check out a used Squire and keep the Ray

Keep in mind that the Special sounds mellower than the previous model. Chromes on the older version would probably sound great; to my ears anyway LOL!
