Good OD or distorsion pedal

Hi everyone

I am looking for a distorsion or overdrive type pedal. I want to add some bite, some crunch to my sound. But i don't necessarily need to go the way of the fuzz (I don't want it to sound like a swarm of bumblebees).

I could never get anything satisfactory with the Boss bass OD. I was checking the MXRs on the web and they look interesting (i like that company).

Any suggestions? Thanks

Digitech Hardwire pedals are phenomenal...and very underrated pedals. The Tube Overdrive will give you a mid focused, smooth overdrive. The Valve Distortion will give you a more mid scooped, punchier grittier sounding distortion.

Like stringer said, if you want to stick with the Dunlop/MXR family then look at the Way Huge pedals. I have a Pork Loin, which is a low gain smooth overdrive. I had a Green Rhino which sounds similar to the Hardwire Tube Overdrive I mentioned above. Also look at the Red Llama and Fat Sandwich. I haven't used them though. You don't want a Swollen Pickle though....it's a fuzz.

The thing about finding a good OD/Distortion is one that works well with bass by not robbing your bottom end. The Hardwire and Way Huge pedals I've had have no problem with the bottom end, and in fact can ADD some. Pretty rare with distortion/od pedals.

If you want bite and crunch, you might want a distortion that focuses the clipping on the top end rather than the bass and lower mids.

Darkglass B3K is so often recommended that it becomes embarrassing to do so again, but it's surely the thing for bite and crunch.

Some also swear by the tech21 Oxford... and the VT bass can get quite bitey.

I'll throw in the fender sub-lime - classed as a fuzz, but the split-band processing can give you a big bottom end with a crunchy top.

i picked up a 3Xfx fatman v1 from a trade with a TBer not long ago and this is the best OD i tried yet, i love it! i used an OCD, tech 21 XXL, bad monkey, tech 21 leeds, several EH's bigg muff, english muffn and the way huge swollen pickle (which i still like allot) but the FATMAN is the winner in my book! :hyper:

All of these are great sounding pedals - the B3K probably has the sharpest top-end of the ones mentioned here. It's really capable of that "stinging" attack.

Topo, I agree with you - I feel like a stupid fan-boy every time I mention it.:rollno: The Sublime is a versatile fuzz as well, from what I've heard.

The MXR bass d.i+ would be a great choice. not everyone's a fan of the distortion channel on the MXR bass d.i+, but some people dig it. it can deliver awesome distortion sounds without obliterating lows. lately I've been thinking about buying one myself. I've heard how it sounds and I can honestly say I dig it. I like both the clean channel and the distortion on the MXR bass d.i+. I'll be purchasing one real soon.
