Has anyone fit their bass in a Toyota Yaris? My Mazda protoge5 has been great for 20 years and may have some years left in it. I'm looking for good used replacement for whenever it bites the dust. Before that I had a Mazda 323 which is small than the protoge5, looks like it might be about the size as a Yaris. All my research concludes that the Yaris is a hidden gem of a used car, probably the most reliable in it's class & cheaper than larger Toyotas. Thanks .

The hatchback or the sedan? I have fit mine in a subaru imprezza sedan and honda civic 2 door and it was not an issue.
Almost any car can fit a bass, the question is what else also fits. I had a friend who played bass and could fit an absurd amount in her tiny Honda Fit. My CRV fits the bass fine but I have to fold the seat down and that makes it impossible to fit my wife and 2 kids in at the same time. I can fit the principal cellist and her cello though, so we sometimes carpool to rehearsal.
Like Mark T wrote, a lot of cars can hold a bass. The problem is how difficult is it to get in and out, do you have to faster the seatbelt so the alrm doen’t go off due to the weight of the body, is the neck resting on something, is your visibility impaired while driving, etc.
I’ve gotten my bass and an AI combo into a Camry, but it wasn’t very practical. If the car was ever in an accident, the bass would be severely damged. A Yaris a lot smaller than a Camry. I once had my bass in a 90s RAV4 along with my amp, the driver’s amp and a small PA but I was sitting with a large PA cabinet on my lap which was not at all safe.
When retiring a minivan back in 2022, I took my empty gig bag with me to dealerships to see how the bass would fit. The salesmen were scratching their heads, especially since it was the #1 most important thing about the car for me. All hatchbacks and even some SUVs weren’t suitable for me. I ended up with a Subaru Outback after deciding the Crosstrek and Forester were too small for anything but emergency transportation.
Disclaimer: at the time there was still very limited availability of cars due to the pandemic so I couldn't simply get a new minivan without waiting almost a year. Mark T mentioned a Honda CRV…they were unobtainable as was the Toyota RAV4.

Since you've had good luck with Mazdas as have I, take a look at the Mazda 3. I've had two of them and they both work(ed) well for me.
My Kia Niro is perfect for me. Short enough to parallel park easily and fit into small spaces in the city. Big enough to keep the bass out of the way of the front seats. Somehow feels like there's more room inside than physically possible.
I have seen a bass in a Yaris. Best to test it with your bass before you buy.
My Lancia Musa has been surprising, If I lower half the back seat,, I can slide the bass in on it's side (strings facing inward, back towards outside), and the neck fits between the two front seats - and the body is supported by the back of the folded seat, so no weight on neck. Then a small amp can also fit in boot, and two passengers (front and rear). Very nicely designed

We also have one of these and it's great. I can usually get the bass, a stool, my backpack, and maybe 2 people in the car.
When I wanted to buy a Yaris I went to the local showroom with the relevant gear and asked them if I might try it in one of their display models.
I was able to fit my DB, a 1x12 cab and a baritone horn in the back with the seats folded down.

For a number of years, I fit my upright, amp, plus the guitarist and his guitar & amp, into a 2006 Scion XA -- essentially a re-styled Yaris. It was snug, and my bass nearly came all the way up to the dashboard. Today, an older Hyundai Elantra sedan, as the Scion awaits some repairs. What I don't want to do is burden myself with an expensive or big car for the day or two per week that I take my bass somewhere. And I'd rather save garage space for bikes.
I can fit my 5/8 bass in my Camaro. And I could have a passenger behind me. The bass is in the passenger seat so the trunk is completely empty for whatever instrument they may bring. And the trunk is surprisingly large.
The look on people’s faces when I pull my bass out of a sports car is hilarious.
