good with computers?

I downloaded some sort of windows or microsoft update the other day, but I can't remember what it was for. Anyways, now my firefox and internet explorer doesn't work. My AOL, AIM, itunes, and everything else works fine. Anyone have some ideas on what I could do to get these programs functioning again?

Assuming you're using XP, just go into System Restore and roll it back three or four days.

System restore just brings back a previous version of the system registry. User created documents, like MSWord documents and the like, will not be deleted. Only changes to programs and system files will be affected. If you've loaded a new program in the last few days, you'll need to re-install it. Otherwise, pretty much nothing will be affected.

hm I may try it.

Apparently it wasn't a couple days ago, it was on February 15th. It says I downloaded 11 security updates for Office 2003, XP, IE 7, etc. As well as a couple updates for powerpoint, office, excel and a malicious software removal tool

That's a bunch, and some MS updates aren't removed by System Restore. But, give it a shot -- Worst case is that you'll still have the same problem. You certainly won't make it worse.

What you can also do is go to add/remove programs... select option that allows you to see all installed upgrades and see which ones are the latest updates. From there you can figure out which one caused the problem. Rollback is a good idea but if it is caused by upgrade it will happen again.

Other things you can try is:

check proxy settings in both IE and firefox and Internet/firewall settings

reinstall Firefox and see if that helps

Go to your control panel, turn off the windows firewall. Windows rule: NEVER install updates unless you know EXACTLY what they're for.

I had almost the same thing.

My version of IE7 stopped working a couple of weeks ago, giving an error saying that the cable's were not connected. Then yesturday, when my Firefox updated to the latest version, it wouldn't connect to the internet either.

My solution was to re-install Norton antivirus. Somehow it had stopoped showing up in the task bar, and wouldn't even load up. Now it's working again and IE and FF are working just fine.

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

I had a similar problem fixing a friend's computer yesterday - it just wouldn't accept my network connection. Turned out to be ZoneAlarm preventing connections. I have never experienced something as hard to set up as networking in windows - all those protocols that have to be installed, firewalls to configure, the obligatory anti-virus updates, and Microsofts cack-handed way of setting everything out.

Oh, and the ONLY time a reboot should be necessary is installing new hardware, not setting up a new network connection! Come on MS, this is 2007...
