Yeah but a forum like this would run on a laptop. -- it probably is running on docker container, A short NLP (Natural Language Processing) and all video and image generation will require more computation than what TB requires in a week. The forum software It is just adding a record on the database and pictures on the server. TB is a medium sized forum running I think on XenFora so 4-8GB+ RAM, 200GB+ storage, and 4+ CPU cores

When AI is involved even for a simple question, it will try to collate from various sources , "think" what your prompt really means, then calculate the ad sense they have so that the answers will have product placements below. If you disable Gemini and AI in your browser settings , there is significantly less computation and therefore cooling involved. It should not really be forced fed on us. That is why I only limit my FB session to 30 minutes a week or less. I have asked my relatives and friends to just text or email me or actually call me.

We do need computers but AI is doing unnecessary computational use specially for frivolous task. Yes it can speed up MRI analysis for example but it should not be used to create pictures of me relaxing around the White House

I will never understand why some musicians have no issues with using tech that is literally designed to destroy their jobs to generate images. People are upset that AI is wrecking music, and then they go ahead and create images, and even artwork for their music using AI. I cringe whenever I see musicians using this tech, they’re literally digging their own graves, one prompt at a time.

Sure, but I was most impressed with the way it handled me describing that the neck is made of roasted maple and extends into the body and is not painted. Nano Bananas (the imaging AI behind Gemini) handled that while other AIs fell flat. AI is doing a much better job. Six months ago it was putting a headstock on a headless bass or making the neck 36 frets on an extended neck. I use AI daily at work and see it improving by leaps and bounds. The way I describe it is that two years ago the code it produced was garbage. Today it's pretty good but I wouldn't fly on an airplane with code written by AI. In another two years, I might feel more confident getting on a plane with AI generated code than human code.

This is maddening! I've recently been in some conversations about whether AI was a good idea and in what way is it actually going to help humanity. With these water usage stats AI has a lot to live up to to counteract these obvious negatives.

AI is something. A few people are making tons of money, most others are losing money. Resources are being used up, and tempers are being tested. I sincerely doubt my use or lack of use in AI makes a difference considering the rest of the worlds use... I agree doing our part is the right/responsible thing to do, but I have my doubts about change happening from my efforts.

It does seem morally and ethically wrong to support the current way about deploying AI/data centers.

Right. My daughter started college headed in the direction of graphic design but jobs for GD professionals are drying up because businesses would rather use AI to create their materials than hire someone do create for them. Soulless music and art.

I work in design education, she is right to be concerned, the entire creative industry is being shaken up by this at the moment. In the long run, I don’t think that design jobs will disappear, but digital skills and digital work in general will have no value whatsoever very soon. Creating physical work that exists away from the internet and away from digital spaces, and actual craft and skill are going to be highly valued again. (I think the same thing is happening in music too). AI is going to devalue everything digital, but outside the internet, in the real world, there is no AI. Designers that have ‘real world’ skills (drawing / craft / making / intelligence / human interaction) will be fine, but designers that can only work using digital tools and only make work for social media / internet / games will be in trouble.
