I used Gemini to mock up the Effigy that I have on order. It did a reasonable job.
Sure, but I was most impressed with the way it handled me describing that the neck is made of roasted maple and extends into the body and is not painted. Nano Bananas (the imaging AI behind Gemini) handled that while other AIs fell flat. AI is doing a much better job. Six months ago it was putting a headstock on a headless bass or making the neck 36 frets on an extended neck. I use AI daily at work and see it improving by leaps and bounds. The way I describe it is that two years ago the code it produced was garbage. Today it's pretty good but I wouldn't fly on an airplane with code written by AI. This is maddening! I've recently been in some conversations about whether AI was a good idea and in what way is it actually going to help humanity. Right. My daughter started college headed in the direction of graphic design but jobs for GD professionals are drying up because businesses would rather use AI to create their materials than hire someone do create for them. Soulless music and art.I will never understand why some musicians have no issues with using tech that is literally designed to destroy their jobs to generate images. People are upset that AI is wrecking music, and then they go ahead and create images, and even artwork for their music using AI. I cringe whenever I see musicians using this tech, they’re literally digging their own graves, one prompt at a time.
I work in design education, she is right to be concerned, the entire creative industry is being shaken up by this at the moment. In the long run, I don’t think that design jobs will disappear, but digital skills and digital work in general will have no value whatsoever very soon. Creating physical work that exists away from the internet and away from digital spaces, and actual craft and skill are going to be highly valued again. (I think the same thing is happening in music too). AI is going to devalue everything digital, but outside the internet, in the real world, there is no AI. Designers that have ‘real world’ skills (drawing / craft / making / intelligence / human interaction) will be fine, but designers that can only work using digital tools and only make work for social media / internet / games will be in trouble.Right.
