Hey bass people of the world(i hope cats for Bass Chat dont see that im bored on a sat with this thread again). Has any one listened to Gospel much.. Im not talking about traditional Gospel,(which is fantastic) but funky stuff. I dont mean to sound arrogant but i have listened to everything from Chaka, to White Zombie, but nothing has touched me musically like this stuff. Its not just the bass playing (which is incredible, slap/finger syle magic) but the whole feeling, rythm, and big band vocals. Now, i have been known to be thinking of what made me, but thats not why i listen to it. Sounds of Blackness got me started on this stuff 10 years ago..

If you like soul funk jazz, you HAVE to listen to this!!!!.. my erm...recommended listen is a choir/band called New Direction..'Send the praise'.../It doesnt get any better than this!!!! Beautiful funky soul gospel, and the bass playing is world class. This is as much as my ears/soul can take!!!!!

Not only is it fun to listen to but it's a blast to play too. Gospel leaves it wide open for a bass player to show his/her stuff for the congregation, not that we're there to do that but it's fun to let loose once in a while. As long as you've got some half way decent chops, got a good sense of groove, and know the song you're playing, you can tear it up. Some of the best compliments I've ever gotten from people came after we played a few gospel tunes at church. They love the stuff at my church.
