Squier VM Jag. ($299)
Esp LTD D-4 ($399)
Peavey Millenium 4 AC BXP ($329)

If it isn't a first bass then a Kala UBass which is more fun than a barrel of monkeys ... other than that... I just don't buy new basses. I'd rather let some other sap (guitarist wanna be bassist this week but not next kinda guy ...) dance the dance of depreciation and snag something better used not abused and preferrably without stickers ...

Having owned the millennium (5-string version), and the LTD D-6, and having played tons of Squiers, I would say dogmatically that while they're all great basses, the D-4 will be in an entirely different league when it comes to quality.

The ESP, though Id also suggest you try the F154dx and go with the one that sounds best to you. Sure the one your looking at is neck thru. But the 154 is 35 scale which gives slightly tighter sound and is quite nice for downtuning if you do that. I tried the D4, but found I loiked the f154dx bit better for sound and fit. Your results may differ. The D4's do vary a fair amount in looks. So Id also suggest trying to get one from store that has a few and pick the best looking one for you if possible.

The D would be fine for downtuning. I tune mine ADGCFBb without an Issue, and the A is still pretty defined.
The F154 is definitely worth considering if you're into the extended scale length, otherwise go with the D-4.
