Ok so I'm a senior in high school and when i graduate my parents said they'll give me $2000 for a new bass. I was thinking of saving up a little on my own so ill have around $3000 to play with (can also sell my MTD if need be but i dont want to. if i did would give me $4000)

My favorite styles are jazz, blues and motown with a tad bit of classic rock thrown in.

I was debating 3 basses, a US lakland Joe osborn, A Rickenbacker 4003 or a fodera NYC

What do you guys think the best choice would be?

Wishbass, all the way.

Or, you could always buy 20 SX basses. :D

Seriously, though, I would agree with whoever suggested buying three used $1000 basses. There are a lot of high quality basses that can be had used for around $1000. Get a Stingray, Jazz, and Lakland, for example. Get three different basses you really like that cover needed tones for versatility. Don't expect one bass to fit all of your needs if you could own three.

Or, you could go for Link Removedand have all the basses you need!

Thanks guys! you've defiantly given me alot to think about! Lot of cool basses mentioned that im now gassing for! Also never considered the possibility of it getting stolen >< Im from a small town Bible belt so New York or Nashvilles gonna be a whole new thing for me. Saving and investing (although extremely boring) does seem like a good idea aswell :) the 20 sx's cant go wrong either lol
First order of business now i think is to insure the gear i already own!
And it sounds like a road trips in order as well!

I graduated last year and I wouldn't ever think of dropping 3 grand on a bass. I'd much have a very nice used $1500 bass and a $1500 rig that I can continue to gig with. If I spent 3 grand on a bass I don't think I would play it.

Here i am. The wet blanket; I'm seasoned (read Old Fart)(actually I've a son your age I have bought gear for, the older ones weren't musical).

What are your graduation plans? How much money can your parents really give you? To study?

Are you already on a scholarship?
Do you plan to major in electrical engineering?(Joe Walsh, Mark Knoffler, Robbie Bachman?) History ?(David Leibman?) Education? (Rendy Ross, Robert Pollard),Economics (Mick Jagger) Dance performance (Madonna-whom I never met while we were in college two years apart)
Or Accounting (go where the money is? You can play whatever you want and it doesn't have to pay??)

Are you going to study music? Performance? Commercial?
Are you gigging much now? Subbing? Jamming?
Bedroom player?

If I didn't know you were going off to school to study music, ""I"" would suggest getting lessons with the best teacher you can find and do a week long summer seminar/camp. $2-3K will go a long way

It's taken me forever to figure where the better use of time might be. Sorry, I've wasted a lot of time, $, and effort on gear, and music when I should have gotten a good teacher and sold most of my gear and attended a music event,==short school, course, meeting or convention.

If you understand my point you are already ahead.

If I got 2K, this is what I do,
buy a used gear maybe around 1000$ is at most...get a stingray, it's to make you and your parents happy (they give you the money because they want you to be happy), and most of all it's to make your parents proud of you...(saving money is the wise thing to do), also, you'll have another 2000$ (your original saving include) on your saving account, it would make you a rich freshment..hehe, there a LOT of need in the collage year...yes...the collage is expensive, I've done that several years ago, now I'm a Lecturer at my collage, so I KNOW how expensive they are...
also, do you ever consider buying a cheap imported gear, such as tribute or MIM jazz, they will be usefull at the dorm room, cheap bass, great sound...

just my opinion....
btw, congratulation on your graduation..

If I may offer a suggestion to the OP: Don't limit yourself to only the 3 basses you're currently interested in buying. Try as many different basses that you can possibly get your hands on.

With that kind of money you can get a top of the line, totally custom bass from any number of talented luthiers. My personal recommendation is Chris Stambaugh- he's a really great guy and he will build literally anything you want.

Good advice IMO. I've looked at Chris' site many times, IMO his prices are very reasonable. And by judging from the pictures of his basses that appear on TB's Stambaugh Club thread, the quality of his work is outstanding.

Not that its anything like college, but when I was in the USAF, I also had a dorm room and a room mate. Besides theft, you have to worry about damage. You will be surprised how many folks may float through your room while you're away. You have some nice axes already. I would just save the money, and take your MIM and Ibanez to school. When you graduate, you can reevaluate if you have the funds to purchase such an item. Hell, if your folks gave you 2k for completing HS, think of what they'll give you when you finish college. ;)

:) thanks guys i never thought how destructive a dorm could be. I started getting my cheaper basses more set up for my liking in anticipation. Now just need a cheap MIM strat so i dont have to take my PRS :/
I think saving till after college is sounding like a pretty good plan atm and after that the stambaughs and sadowskys are looking real nice :)

Awesome! Glad to hear that our assistance proved helpful. You won't regret having $2,000 sitting in the bank when you want to hang out with friends and whatnot. Thanks for taking our advice!
