I just recently obtained a mid-50's model blonde Epiphone Upright that has never had a scroll or neck break. Yeah, I'm stoked, but I 'm also in serious need of a gig bag. I'm a bluegrass guy so this bass is going to be traveling in my 1987 Toyota Corrolla (yet another reason for you to envy me) and be toted through crowded hall ways getting to jam sessions and such. I need a gig bag that will REALLY protect my bass. I'm very new to the world of Upright accessories and such, but I feel that I'd rather drop more jack on a serious gig bag than a potentially serious repair resulting from lack thereof. Budget cap $400. What say you envious fellow? :P

I don't have an expensive bass, but I learned the hard way that a good, sturdy, protective case is the way to go. Don't skimp; any of the bags mentioned here will do the trick.

I recently got a Messina bag, and it is a hoss. Thick, dense foam padding, no-fooling-around straps and handles (made from seat-belt grade nylon), etc.

One other benefit; I had an outdoor gig at the height of the Midwest heat wave. 99 degrees when I pulled up after the 45-minute drive. Had to leave the bass in the car for about a half-hour after that. When I unzipped the case, the interior was still cool from my house's air-conditioning!

I also have an Epiphone (1948-49 B4), which I schlep all over Southern CA to old-time and bluegrass jams. I hope you love yours as much as I do mine!

One thing to consider is that the body is a full inch shallower than most other 3/4 basses, which means some bags that might otherwise fit end up being quite sloppy. The standard-model 3/4 Mooradian, for example, was way too loose for my comfort -- the one I bought in the TB Classifieds ended up on my Eastman. I use the Presto bag that came with the Eastman on the Epi, and it fits a little better, but it has precious little padding.

If I hadn't just used up the bass-goodie budget for the year replacing my Gamut gut G/D (after just shy of two years), I would order either a custom Mooradian or a Messina; having a bag with excellent padding that fits like a glove will be worth the price, I'm sure.
