Great p or p/j basses for 800 usd ?

I'm looking for a new bass around 800 maximum 1000 usd . A p or pj bass With a nice slap tone . I'm not to keen on buying second hands so the prices are for brand new. any recommendations ? And please tell me the pros and cons of the bass if u have the time

Look at a Yamaha BB414 or 415.

The Yamahas are great. Also look into Fender's Reggie Hamilton Standard. It has active/passive operation, and U.S. pickups including a noiseless J. It's one of Fender's best values IMO, and a versatile, great-sounding bass.

My personal fave is G&L's SB-2, which is available in the import Tribute line, and produces the most heavy-duty split-coil tone imaginable. (I have the USA model.) But if you like to solo the bridge pickup, it's not the best choice, because that pickup is designed more like a tone control. Fender's Frank Bello sig is similar to the SB-2 -- high output split-coil, with no tone control -- but the J pickup is noiseless, which is a plus IMO.

That's for P/J. For straight P basses, I think Fender's new American Specials are around your price, and would be a good bet. The recent MIM Standards are good too, and if you try a bunch you might find a really great one.
