Its made by Germans but at that point they didnt have the guts to make a movie from a German point of view. Not one in the crew belive in the leader nor the cause. Very strange in 1941. There is only one "nazi" onboard. And we all know how he was portrayed. A good movie but it could have been made in USA.

You conversely mentioned Der Untergang as an authentic German movie by comparison. I don't find the Nazi's in that movie portrayed in a very flattering light so maybe I'm not following your argument completely. In that film they come off as the mad fools they were. Of course some of that may have been the desperate situation they were in at the time. Anyway, both Das Boot and Der Untergang are two of my favorite World War II movies in that they are both riveting and historically accurate.

Do you remember the scene where Trudl Junge meet Hitler for the first time? I dont think a scene like that would have been incorporated in a German ww2 movie, before 1995. You also have the story about Peter from the Hitler jugend.
Anyway..i think there is a difference. They are more willing to dig a little deeper now and even nazis are portrayed as humans.

Have you seen the series called Unsere Mutter, unsere Vater ? Recomended.

Good point. I can't even imagine that scene in an older type of film. Nonetheless they did make Eva Braun's character look totally ridiculous -- yes I'm sure in real life she wasn't that bright but this film made her out to be over the top stupid. I will have to check out the other films you have listed as they are probably not in common distribution over here in the U.S. unlike the two films I originally mentioned.
