His bass line on 21st Century Schizoid Man remains one of the top five bass lines in rock history, IMO. Pictures at an Exhibition was the first album I bought with my own money. ELP remain one of my favorites.

Greg Lake shaped my attitude and approach to bass more than any other musician I've listened to before or since. And although I'm not into hero worship, if there is anybody I would ever consider to be my musical hero, it definitely would be Greg Lake. Listening to the appropriately titled song From the Beginning on the Trilogy album was my deciding moment when I realized electric bass was going to be my instrument.

And I never looked back.

So thank you Greg. I not only joined you on your journey, your journey served as the launching pad for my own. For that I can never thank you enough.

God this brings back such sweet memories for me. Going to college at UW and catching the bus to the Key Arena. Passing the fountain then seeing one of the best shows of my life with ELP. My late brother told me-- you gotta listen to this band. I'm glad I did.

I always wondered how it could possibly be that my favorite bass player was such a cracking good guitarist. I saw him on the tv sometime in the 80s and he did an acoustic guitar solo like he was Richard Thompson or some English John Fahey. Scary it was.
