gretsch junior jet ii pickups problems?

Understood. The clarification was posted to avoid casting aspersions on any TB members and by extension TB itself.
I have not experienced any popping, or other noise. Just intermittent switching. When it fails, a couple of extra switch activations clear the fault.

The pickups are actually a smidge smaller. Threw a big wrench in my EMG mod plans

Umm... Would a dremel work? Is the ring too small or the cavity too small for thunderbird pickups? The G2220 can fit TV Jones if you sand (or dremel) the pickup ring a bit. Wondering if the same would work. I'm asking for those searching for it later.

I work with electrical switching at work. If I saw a switch with an intermittent failure like this I'd replace it, because it's going to go down hill. If enough people ask, I could post a link to a 4 position rotary that would be a good replacement for it (may have to put something to beef up screw since the hole is bigger than most pots). I'd wire it bridge/parallel/neck/off (or off at the other end doesn't matter). Diagrams could be drawn quickly if anyone needs it.

just saying mine did the exact same thing before it died. those couple activations will stop doing anything

Yup. Nearly 50 years as an electronics tech. I know that intermittent usually is the precursor to failure.
Thanks for the thought on the rewire. Probably just keep mine stock. May be looking to trade it in down the road.

that rewire is as close to stock without using the same sort of cheap part. The make-before-break rotary will also keep it from popping when switching. I'm sure you could buy a 3 way and keep the wiring almost identical.

How does the Jet hang on the body when standing up playing? Pretty centered or? I see the front knob for the strap is about 15 fret or so, a little further back on p basses and such which have like around 12 fret?

I use a 4.5 inch leather strap and it hangs just fine.

For those trying to get the most out of the stock switch, it may prove beneficial to check the contact points of the switch and clean them if necessary.

Yup! That be plan A. A little poke with the burnishing tool.
I just cleared my bench and hope to get to it this week.
Also going to eyeball the switch action real well.

a DP3T switch (on/on/on) like G&L uses on their L-1000 could be wired to function exactly as the stock one, but with much less noise in switching (if you buy the make-before-break version).

They even look very similar.

Follow up...

Opened up the cavity on my 2220... cleaned the pick-up selector switch.
Noticed that "Epiphone" was stamped on the switch frame, FWIW.

lol.... well I guess it is likely the same factory. our same source for the parts.

The pickup dimensions on my junior jet ii are 35x70mm, not including the mounting rings. I've looked into replacing the pickups but the odd size apparently makes that difficult without altering the pickup cavities which I'm not inclined to do. Tv Jones Thundertrons might fit without significant alteration but after sales tax and shipping, they might cost more than I paid for the guitar. Nevertheless, I still enjoy playing it.

Sorry to bump a dead thread but I have the Turquoise Junior jet ii bass with the mahogany neck, the pickup dimensions seem to be close to this but not quite the same, I make mine to be around 30x70mm , does anyone know if Gretsch revised the pickups for the limited edition junior jet ii basses ?

On Am a zon they have "Artec Mvba4 pickups" that supposedly fit Gretsch jr. jet basses.

The only problem with these is that the pole piece screws don't exactly line up with the outer strings… But then again they don't line up on my brand new Fender Mustang Player 2 PJ bass either.

The Artecs are mini humbuckers. The Gretsch ones are single coils.
