So much good advice in this thread!
I've taken two of my basses for a pro setup, keeping my easiest-to-play bass home for practicing for now. It has medium gauge strings (DR Hi Beams) but I've found them to be very easy on the fret hand nonetheless.
Since I'm mostly doing headphone practice right now, it's been easy for me to set my bass to 'too loud' to help back off. But man, bad habits are hard to break. I'm probably backing out of my audition, if I can't sustain safe playing through an entire rehearsal. Let's see what happens.
Is there an easy way to work IEMs or something like that into my rig for non-silent practice? All the headphone outputs disconnect the speaker, and if I use the direct out I'd still need to use a mixer or something to take that to headphone levels. I have a small analog mixer that can do the job but that seems like overkill.
