Growl

Fellas,
I just got a brand new Fender P special deluxe MIM for Christmas. It has factory stock round wound strings and Fender stock noiseless PUPS. I play thru a VT Sansamp Pedal and Hartke LH500 amp and Hartke XL 410 cab. How would I get that growl I hear on so many recordings? Better yet, can I get that growl with my rig?

My new Fender has the P Pup and the J pup. Sorry if this a NOOB question. I am a NOOB all over again with this bass.

Switch to flats.. I switched to flats and it made a world of difference in my overall tone.

First off, get rid of the stock strings and get yourself a set of quality stainless rounds. That VT should get you every bit of growl that you need, but I would not bother with it until you get some decent strings!

How would flats help him get more growl? Flats mellow out the sound.

What is this mythical growl? Is it not the product of studio compressors ironing out bass tracks?

I cannot see how a P into a Sansamp VT character pedal would not be growling away, but is growl just overdrive or what?

I find steel strings to be growly on my 50s p bass.
