I have a similar Memphis 70s Jazz from the same era, except with a maple neck/black body + blocks, binding. Great and solid bass in general with a killer neck but the original pickups were terrible and fragile (I don't even think they were hum-cancelling with both pickups on, but that could have been my near-identical Ibanez from the same era and probably same factory). The electronics in most of the 70s Japanese Fender copies were by far the weakest link of even the "top of the line" versions like my Memphis and Ibanez basses. Frankly hard to believe if they had lasted in his bass for all the years he gigged it.David Sims just had some rando-cheapo pickups in a Memphis J copy, correct? (or whatever came in the Memphis). Love his tone.
I replaced the pickups in my Memphis with a set of the old Squier "Duncan-Designed" pickups that used to come in the Vintage Modified Jazz basses, and that bass just rips! The Duncan-designed pickups were just import versions of the Seymour Duncan SJB-1 pickup set, which are fantastic aggressive traditional Jazz singles as long as you put them in a naturally aggressive bass (the Memphis is very much that!). They used to pop up used on Ebay on a fairly regular basis for cheap when people were trying to "upgrade" their Squiers, but they haven't been the stock pickups for years now so you see them far less often. A great deal if you can find them, but the US made SD SJB-1 sets are also very reasonably priced for the quality IMO.
