Hey don't take me the wrong way but lemme understand this right.... Guitar Center is a bad place and their employees are slimy used car salesman because they ONLY took $100 off a $750 guitar and then refused to give you a hi-quality case and a pack of strings for free on top of that? So... because they refused to sell you $850 - $950 worth of stuff for $660, just because you want them to...that makes them slimy used car salesman a-holes? I'm glad I don't work at GC !!!
Tell you what lets scale this scenario back a little... why don't you go to the gas station and pump $75 worth of gas then go inside and offer them $66 and tell them they should throw in a 6-pack and candy bar to make it a good deal and see what happens.... gas stations make the same 15% profit margin as gear stores do... go tell them they're scum for not giving you your gas for 30% off!
Working at Daddy's I learned that most people operate under the impression that every used guitar gets traded in with a case (less than 50% of trades come in with cases) and that if it doesn't come with one they should just "throw one in for free". Most people also seem to operate under the idea that at retail stores like Sam Ash and GC and Daddy's .... a bass that sells for $599.99 probably cost them like $200... otherwise they wouldn't feel justified asking for hundreds and hundreds of dollars off "just because" and then demand a free $120 case to boot.... like I said I'm glad I don't work at GC .... that poor used car salesman bent over backwards to give u a deal on the guitar you wanted and probably earned about $6 in commission for his efforts only to have you think of him as scum ....
Pablo,, so I can help you get it straight, Maybe I was unclear about my GC experience with 2 salesman and not the whole store. Plus I am not attacking your response to me either. Nothing personal.
1st, I saw a USED 1989 Strat on the used wall for $749. Also saw it was missing parts (whammy bar and rubber cap off the pickup selector, and who knows what else might have been changed in 23 years or stolen off the guitar while hanging. It was marked as having a case but somehow when asked, it miraculously could not be found.
2nd, The salesman said he could throw in a cheap Roadrunner case and find a whammy bar and missing cap and knock off $49 since it did not have the case it was supposed to. I then asked, how much could he sell it to me for if I did not want the cheap Roadrunner case. So he said $660 $90 off the tagged WITH original case price.
3rd When before walking in the store a 2nd time, I called to inquire about putting a deposit on a guitar I saw on their wall, I was told I did not need to leave a deposit. Just come in and we'll talk about the guitar. Upon doing so and arranging to come back in the next day to pay a replacement salesman, who was there during our negotiation to handle it for original guy; I assumed the details were cut and dry. I left in a good mood anxious to bring my checkbook the next day as arranged.
4th When I called the next day to notify the replacement salesman I was on my way, could he prep the guitar with the Black '89 Strat with the missing parts and have it ready? He said, " he'd check to see if it was even still there" I asked him "why would it NOT be there? You were present at my deal with the original salesman" He then answered, "since I didn't leave a deposit someone from Alaska could have bought it off the computer or something in the meantime."
5th regarding your $75 worth of gas and $850-$950 worth of guitar example, My already owned 1989 Strat was purchased by me with shipping for $660 and imagine this, it had the actual Fender case, actual Fender original P'ups and all the Original Fender parts it came with in 1989. So, it was not unreasonable on this Guitar center one not want to pay more...$850,$950, or the store marked $749 for a guitar and case that somehow was missing the case it was supposed to have with it. I am sure a new hard fender case costs more than $90. So, $660 was a fair price for a guitar without a case and I am sure a $4 set of strings would not have broken the bank at GC.
6th After it was all said and done, I did buy the guitar. I was happy with how it played except it needing strings, I even did not raise a stink or return it when it turned out not to be a 1989 as marked, but a newer model.
Now as for the salesman working hard for a $6 commission, I find it hard to believe he worked that hard to type up the serial number, enter my check into the system and stamp my receipt at the door so the door girl wouldn't be bothered. If one wants to cry about hard work, let him try contracting and construction work where one has to lift 10000's of lbs of building materials, sell a job, build the job in rain, snow, heat or cold, and actually do it on time and under budget.
So to conclude, my whole discussion of this will not find me retracting my observation of the "used car" manner the 2 GC salesman presented. Being in business for myself, the initial sale is not the goal, the future sales and repeated good word of mouth should be the goal. A $4 set of strings and the original case the guitar was listed with at even the original $749 price would have done wonders.
