Guitar Center Sterling Ray4 HH special colors

I did a search and I couldnt find anything, so sorry if this has been covered and I missed it. GC has two Ray4 HH models that are not on the Sterling website, one in Toluca Lake blue and one in Trans Black satin. I'm assuming these are special models for Guitar Center/Musicians Friend/Music and Arts since both colors only show up on those sites, but typically any GC exclusives are labeled as such, or maybe not. I've not payed much attention to Sterling basses, so maybe this is common? I'm thinking about picking up the Toluca Lake blue as its on sale for $319, hard to beat that price.

Not sure of exclusivity but they had the Satin Black one on sale for Stupid Deal Of The Day for $280.00 a few weeks back. It's very good bass for the price.

Yep. My impulsive shopping behavior forced me to buy one. $299.59 after taxes delivered to my door. Can't beat that. That's what used ones go for.

I do plan to modify the wiring so all 5 positions are in parallel mode. In stock form 1, 3 & 5 are in series, which I don't care for.

It seems Guitar Denter does have a few SBMM models in colors that don't appear on the SBMM website or Sweatwater, Amazon, ZZounds or elsewhere. I would assume they are exclusives, which may also explain the lower sale prices.

Me too, I think a lot of what people don't like about the Sterling basses compared to the US basses is mostly from the pickups being in series.

The metal core guys probably like them in series mode, but I prefer it sound as close to the delicious tone of a MM Stingray as possible.

I agree. I had a 4003 and never understood people who tried to make them sound like something else. When I buy a Stingray I want it to sound like a Stingray.

Other than that, what's the difference between black and trans black?

The trans black shows some wood grain under the finish. The amount can vary. My 4HH is almost a solid flat black, but I've seen some trans blacks that, while still flat black, show much more wood grain underneath.

The Stealth models have no wood grain. They are simply a flat black finish.

Thanks, I thought so.
I've seen some of the Squier Walnut P basses that looked very plain, and some with very nice woodgrain showing through.
Not sure why, though.
Other than that, trans black can look great.

Played a few of these at my GC yesterday evening. They were... not good. I'd be curious to try one after someone really dialed it in with a setup but first impressions were not positive for a $1600 bass.

I've never played a Ray 34 or 24, but the 4s seem to be of acceptable quality for the price.

I dunno, could just be the examples at my GC but I wasn't impressed with them. To be fair the $2800 EBMM hanging with them wasn't much better though. They'd be fine after getting a good setup I think.
