Double Bass Gut string ID?

Hi all,

Can anyone help ID this old gut set? The E and A are silver wrapped gut (with a tarnished E), the D has a tynex or some sort of nylon wrap, and the G is plain red gut. All of the strings have gold wrap top and bottom, except for the G which has some green and gold winding on the bottom.

The D string below is definitely a Red O Ray, and it has a different silk than above.

Oh maybe so but I think I’ve seen Red O Ray with yellow silk and also with green. Not an expert but have seen a couple including plain red gut. I defer to an expert though. Just my vague recolllection.

I guess it's possible Red o Ray (ROR) changed windings over the years. Or, had different wraps for different gauges. I know the one in the second pic is ROR because I got it in it's original packaging. I think a number of makers dyed their gut strings red, not just ROR.

I wish we had an expert handy! In fact, it'd be a great idea if someone could put together a sticky file with "identifiable gut strings" in it. I'd definitely contribute, although I don't have a ton of info...

Yes I have som La Bella E strings with red gut
It was for extra longevity apparently
