Double Bass Gut strings and dogs...similar experience?

So...I've recently put on my first set of gut strings and my dogs are really, really, really interested in them. I have to "NO" them off sniffing them...similar experience? I suppose its no surprise, but I'm just curious if others have had that reaction from their dogs with gut strings...I have to make sure they don't have access!

I once read that someone had a brand new set of naked gut strings laying on a table. When the dog was alone with the strings that must have a delicious moment for the dog, but less when the owner returned and the strings were gone.

This happended to me, except they were a worn out G and D I was replacing. I'd taken them off and put them on the floor, then had to leave the room for a few minutes. When I got back, the strings were gone, and for a second I couldn't figure it. Hadn't I left them on the floor? Then I saw our dog in the hall licking her chops and then the penny dropped. My wife and I made a bet on who would be standing behind her when the strings made their reappearance, but thankfully she managed to digest them

Not DB gut strings, but when I was playing hand drums regularly the dogs were VERY interested in the goatskin heads. Couldn't leave drums within dog-reach.

One of my dogs is a serial licker that HAS to taste everything he comes into contact with. Since I use mineral oil on my guts I have to keep a real close eye on him. He's only tried to snatch a loose string once but he's always trying to get a taste.

I've had this problem with a few dogs. It really sucks when the owner won't discipline them. One friend's dog was completely fixated on my strings and would constantly try to lick them. I'm sure chewing would have soon followed had I not intervened. The owner thought it was funny, and wouldn't remove the dog from the playing area until I told him it was me or the dog.

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but I can't abide gear destruction!

I've really lucked out with the cats I have. They are mostly disinterested in my gear, except for my Mooradian cases- Kitty Fort Especial!

Even my dogs dig my Mooradian case if I leave it open on the floor...king size dog bed!

I went to a house for a rehearsal once when I had a gut g string. The dog sniffed it and bit at it! Had a little tooth mark chunk taken out of the after length! Hide the guts from the dogs!
