Hagstrom Active / Passive

Had the opportunity to play a Hagstrom bass today at a small store in FL. It was an interesting bass--you could use it active or throw a switch on the backside and play passive. It had a pair of humbucking pickups and a selector switch you could use them as HBs or as single coils. There was a volume and a two position tone (bass / treble) control for each PU. The neck was secured with six bolts but I was most attracted to the tuning machines--they weren't the typical lollypop or cloverleaf--they looked like they were machined from pretty thick stock with each having about three levels. Figured I'd look at it more indepth online only to discover they there isn't much about them. Anyone else play one of theirs?? It had some really interesting sounds and a lot of potential.
