Hamer Velocity body shape

A friend at work just bought a Hamer Velocity 4 string. He says that the body is warped. When he lays a straight edge across the back there's about a 3/8" gap in the middle.
I have no knowledge of these basses so any of you that might have, is the body shaped this way by design? Or did he receive a defective bass?

If it was warped, it would have a corresponding warp across the front. More likely, it's a carved/shaped back...

Yeah, I haven't actually seen the bass and can't tell from pics. Some basses are carved that way. As I recall a friend's Spector is like that. My memory isn't the best after about 5 mins with a bass 15 years ago.

Spector NS-2s definitely are curved front and back like that. My Brian Moore is curved just on the front, perhaps the Hamer is just curved on the back?

Spector Euro and Warwick streamer (German - as it is a Spector copy, more or less) have the curved body as well.
