don´t know how many of you know joshua young... ...if you don´t, check him out.

but this is meant to be about the question if sound comes from gear or the hands of the player?

in most videos joshua plays a cheap ibanez but here he plays a fender jb... ...and it sounds a lot like when he´s playing his ibby, at least to my ears.

seems to be "his" sound...

A good sound comes from both, but a good technique and a clear vision of how you want to sound will personalise the sound of a lot of gear.

IMO good gear will always sound better than bad gear but it's always the player that makes the difference.
