So I have been doing some reading because I find it is always nice to get some honest opinions from bassists when it comes to gear. I have an LH1k and a hx410 and have just recently found a hx115 to complete the stack. But as I have been looking around multiple people say mixing 410 with 115 is just a waste because the 410 overpowers the 115 making it more ornamental than functional. My question is does the balance knob make a difference because it sounds like it was put there to fix this problem. I figure if the famous players who use this setup are able to play through it live then it must be worth it in some way considering they have to move it all, why would they take more than what's needed?

Speakers make sound by moving air (displacement)
The typical 1X15 has displacement close to a 2X10
Even using the balance knob, the 1X15 will still be outgunned. Unless of course you turn the 4X10 way down, but then why carry it ?
As far as pros using that setup - A recording contract and tours does not mean that they are the most knowledgeable in the science of acoustics. And of course, THEY don't move it, roadies do.
ETA - There is also the issue of phasing between the 2 different speaker sizes

I have this setup and it SOUNDS good to my ears. If you can,try them out and if they sound nice to you its all good. The world won't end if you mix cabs, its just better if you don't.
So it would probably be a better choice just to spend a bit more and go with a matching 410 to make an 810 stack. This would technically just double the sound right? I love the sound of the 410, I just want to have lots of headroom volume wise so being heard over loud drummers (that seems to be every drummer I have played with) will never be an issue. I found another 410 for just 10 dollars more than the 115.
Always go matching cabs to avoid phasing issues. Don't wanna spend money and end up disappointed in the end, no?
