Have you ever destroyed a bass by accident?

One time I caught this 16 pound bass and when I was netting him I sneezed and accidentally launched him into the top of a pine tree, in which tree he expired.

When I was in my teens I use to take them apart to "modify" them and would usually loose all the parts Luckily it was never anything really nice but I wish I still had that first bass.

Nope I've never accidentally dropped a bass into a wood chipper.
That is to say I've never destroyed a bass.

On the other hand I have broken many but fortunately fixed many more.

As a luthier it never ceases to amaze me what some of you consider to be destroyed.

My first bass was a brand new '79 Peavey T-40, when I was 14. I really wanted a JetGlo Ric, but it was all I could afford. One day after school (and probably several pulls off an 18" Graffix), I decided to rattle can it black. Not knowing any better, I took it all apart and sprayed right over the existing finish. No sanding, no prep, just shake and spray.

Well, it turned out pretty crappy, and I lost a bunch of parts. I didn't know how to do a set-up and it was never the same. I managed to sell it, but for next to nothing. It wasn't totally destroyed, but pretty close.

When I got my Ric, I had someone who knew what they were doing do all the mods. Still have that one!

not a bass....i carelessly let a lightly finished Guild acoustic guitar take far too much humidity in a basement two summers ago ....glue joint let go ...it creaks when i press against the body and the dove joint is let some glue go as well ....then it fell off a chair at a student recital a year ago cracked the neck behind the nut .....it's my teaching/ campire guitar now.

1981...3 piece hard rock band. The guitarist and I would end sets sometimes by sliding our guitar necks together and letting the amps ring and feedback till our "tech" turned them off. I had a 1960 Gibson EB-0 at the time, and for some reason it slid out of my hands, hit the ground hard, mushed in the wood at the jack and split the body seam halfway down the body. I did my dangdest to fix it and actually had it working again after a couple years of neglect, lent it to a friend who promptly knocked it out of a stand, and it broke in the same spot. Since then, it's sat in a case patiently waiting for me to restore it properly. One day I will.

Every time I try to play any Rush song I nearly smash my bass out of disappointment, hopelessness, and anger... But haven't done it yet...

I once smashed a pickup on my old p bass copy, I had a cheap crappy strap at the time and while I was playing it just came off and fell face down onto my rowing machine!
On the plus side I learnt how to wire in a pick up!

No. However I've had instruments get their ugly bumps and bruises through some mishaps here and there, but none destroyed thankfully. I have seen other musicians suffer major damage to an instrument, including snapped necks or the one time I saw a guitar player who forgot to load his pricey, Martin acoustic in case into his car after a gig, and he backed his car over it while others outside, and I were yelling for him to stop. That poor guitar became instant kindling.

i was lucky, bass not destroyed:

some weeks ago i was riding my bike ... with my gig-bag on my back ... when i arrived home i noticed that i didn´t close the zipper of that gig-bag at all ... i was lucky that my brand new MM Big Al did not fall out of the bag while riding the bike ... puhhhhh.

I tossed this Framus Nashville bass onto my bed sometime in (I think) 1983.
It bounced off and went on the floor with a sick-making crack.
It broke the neck joint, the headstock and put a crack in the body.
It wouldn't fix. I was heartbroken.

I searched for years for a replacement and found one last year on EBay.
It's a Deluxe which has binding, where my original didn't.

I dropped a cheapy Ibanez on my basement floor once, it landed right on the jack and the body pretty much shattered into 5 pieces, but, i couldn't let such a nice piece of junk go to waste so a few months and a bunch of titebond later and its fully functioning again.
