Double Bass Having my bass repaired by a master (pics)

Hey guys. I thought I'd share this brief but rewarding experience from a festival I played over the weekend.

At the first gig on the Friday night, I noticed that I was getting significant hum and no gain out of my Underwood pickup on my upright. As I switch between electric and arco / pizz upright during a set, I was puzzled by the amount of tweaking I suddenly had to do to get the upright sounding half decent through the PA.

The next day I took my bass to Ben Puglisi at the instrument makers tent. He explained that the Underwood was most likely at the end of its useful life and I should try a Gage Realist. I agreed, so he fit the pickup there and then (to a crowd of bemused onlookers).

That night my sound was back, problem solved. In fact it's the best amplified upright sound I've had in a while.

Thank you again, Benedict!
