Headhunters

Those albums are amazing. Headhunters is in my top 5 fave albums.

Pardon me if some of these are obvious, but you never know what someone might not have been exposed to.

Galactic, Coolin' Off and Medeski, Martin and Wood, Shack-Man. Both of these albums are a little more laid back, but when I hear them I can't help but think that about Herbie's influence.

I don't know how big of a Miles Davis fan you are, butI'm a huge fan of the album On the Corner. Its kind of far out there, but it grooves. Also, there's a live album called Dark Magus that appears to be all improv that always makes me want to grab a bass.

And, as tacky as it may seem, try these two websites:

www.allmusic.com - good to peruse for ideas

www.pandora.com - its a bad@ss internet radio thing that you can pick a band (or song) and it makes a radio station based on similarities with other stuff. I've found a ton of cool different artists on that site. Sometimes, its a little off, but you can just give a thumbs down.

If he has Headhunters(their debut) & Thrust...I would suggest Flood (Headhunters' live album).

Something kinda similar may be Eddie Henderson's Sunburst (on Blue Note, IIRC). Henderson played trumpet in Hancock's Mwandishi collective(check out Sextant).

Just picked up Headhunters last weekend. Wow! What a great album! I've heard Chameleon more than once on the Monday evening funk show on college radio, just never knew where it was from though. Picked up the album because I recognized the cover from MJ5150 and Steveb98's avatars. Guess I lucked out! :)

gribuski Thanks for the other albums you listed. Now I know what to check out on my next album buying spree. :)

Flood was a pricey Japanese import for awhile(IIRC, I paid about $35 or so for it at AI)...I thought it was issued recently domestically...

I've always been disappointed in a way, that there is nothing else like "Headhunters"...:hmm:

I've often followed up ideas from threads here and never come across anything that combines deep funk with Jazz so well - the only thing that comes anywhere near for me, are certain Incognito tracks - but generally their albums are more about vocals - although some instrumental tracks do have the best of British Jazz talent!! :)

Incognito's "Last Night in Tokyo", from 1996, is one of my favourite live albums of ANY genre. :smug: :smug:

I'm with you Bruce. I started a thread a few weeks back and while it did a lot to hip me to some cool music that I was not familiar with, it did not get me into that Headhunters or Thrust zone. :(
