I have managed to tame that a bit by using a HPF. I have tried another headphone, the DT-700 pro x, which had a much flatter response, and a straight cable. The bass was tighter sounding for sure but overall these headphones were really boring sounding for other kinds of music, the Sony’s are much more fun. The DT700’s were triple the price of the Sony’s so I am sending them back and keeping the Sony’s. But I will just need to proactively manage the bass frequencies a bit otherwise it’s very easy to drive the low end into distortion which is what I think is causing that mushiness. A hpf helps a lot but it’s also key to be careful in general with the gain staging.
when you listen to mastered musical material they sound great because all of that has been tamed by the engineers involved. And then they sound pretty great with their boosted lows and highs. But when feeding them with a bass guitar sound that has not been mastered and tamed, I feel they easily end up hyping the lows into disortion, it’s hard to tell it’s distortion at those frequencies, buts that’s what it is I think and can cause the pitch to be smothered in addition to sounding mushy. But overall I think I can make them work and probably will be easier when my hpf pedal gets here
