Headphone hunt

Hey guys, I’m on the hunt for some new phones for practice/recording my sadowsky. I’ve been looking into some beyer dynamic’s and in particular dt770 pro or dt880 pro. Has anyone had any experience with these in terms of playing/recording bass? I’m looking for either semi-open or closed phones because of sound leakage. Any other recommendations? I also use the phones for gaming, and watching tv and listening to music. For reference I have been using sennheiser momentum 2.0’s for about four years but I am finding these to be too bass friendly, and not neutral in tonal response, which is what I’m looking for.

Any thoughts?

Between those two, I’d go with the 880s. The frequency response of the 880 appears to be more flat than the 770s.

one test showed the 770s with some odd dips and humps at various frequencies, particularly 4K (big cut). Bass freqs on the 700 seem to be all over the place. 880s seems smoother in the low end.

Whether or you hear any of that with the Sadowsky is hard to say.

I have a pair of the DT770 pros, and use them pretty much exactly as you plan to. I got them maybe 4 years ago and have been very pleased with them. The sound signature seems slightly more "relaxed" than other headphones I have tried. For me, that means very low listener fatigue...I have worn them for 6 to 8 hours at a time with no issues.

I haven't tried the 880s or 990s but I would like to sometime.

It is worth considering the DT770M, they are specially made for drummer and bassists and have a slightly different, "harder" membrane, which makes them longer lasting when confronted with low frequencies over an extended period of time. It is 80 ohm.

There is also a bluetooth version, but I prefer wired: and bluetooth has too much latency for bass practice.

 

[One Way]

At my home studio I have Audio-Technica ATH-M40x, ATH-M50x, and Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 ohm headphones. ATX-M40x is very “flat” in frequency response and exactly what I want for mixing and mastering a recording. The DT770 Pro 250 ohm phones are also very good and have a slight advantage in comfort, I find they are my go-to for producing. The higher impedance may have an effect on frequency response relative to lower impedance DT770 models.

The Audio-Technica ATX-M50x sound a little more “exciting” to me when listening to music. They have better low and high end frequency response relative to the ATX-M40x and they are my go-to headphones for bass practice. YMMV
